CHRISTO AND JEANNE-CLAUDE; and ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE ASSOCIATESDraft Environmental Impact Report for Running Fence. Prepared under contract to the Sonoma County Planning Department, Santa Rosa, California. Foster City, CA: Environmental Science Associates, 1975. Presentation copy, signed by Christo and dated 1976, with a sample of the white nylon cloth used in the project in a plastic pouch affixed to the last leaf. Original comb-bound orange paper covers. 11 x 8 1/2 inches (28 x 22 cm); vii, [1, blank], S-6, 265 pp., with photocopied frontispiece, folding maps, and illustrations. Nearly pristine, with the ghost of a paperclip to the front cover, and the usual creasing and wear to the covers around the plastic comb-binding, the interior clean and bright. Christo and Jeanne-Claude's ambitious, large-scale 1976 installation, Running Fence, consisted of a twenty-four-mile-long fence of white nylon fabric supported by steel poles and wires that ran across Sonoma and Marin counties from Highway 101 into the Pacific Ocean. The installation lasted two weeks before being taken down, leaving no trace. The planning and approval process for the project, however, took over a year to complete after the artists were met with a mixture of protest and local government bureaucracy. Part of that difficult, hard-fought approval process was this book. Sonoma County "retained Environmental Science Associates (ESA) to assess the potential environmental impact of the proposed Running Fence," which proved that the project would have little long-term effects on the area's land and wildlife (p. iii). This was the first time an artwork had ever been assessed with an Environmental Impact Report, a landmark moment in the history of installation art.No condition report? [MAP - PARIS]TURGOT, MICHEL ETIENNE and BRETEZ, LOUIS. Plan de Paris commencé l'Année 1734 ... sous les ordres de Messire Michel Etienne Turgot ... Achevé de Graver en 1739. [Paris: s.n., 1739]. Contemporary full red calf with the arms of the City of Paris (as issued) gilt-stamped at the center of boards, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. 21 1/2 x 16 inches (55 x 41 cm); 20 engraved plates, with plates 18 and 19 (containing the title cartouche) conjoined and folded, as usual, and the unnumbered folded guide map showing how to assemble the 20 maps into a single large-scale map. Wear to boards and spine, mostly at edges, but with a few scuffs to the boards, head of the spine chipped, and corners bumped, the front joint cracking, the rear is cracked through the cords but is still holding by the endpaper; certain maps with varying degrees of light to moderate toning, occasional spots mostly visible only on the maps' versos, the key map with an edge tear extending to the neatline, a few maps starting to split at central folds or along the tab at the bottom of the sheet, a few creases at the corners and margins. One of the great triumphs of 18th-century decorative mapmaking. Per Millard, this is a monumental, "comprehensive and unique" map of Paris, celebrating that great city and providing a "major record of the architecture and gardens." Drawn with a bird's-eye perspective (remarkable in an age before flight), the map is oriented to the east to allow the portals of churches to be shown.Berlin Kat. 2506; Cohen-de Ricci 807; Millard French 39.No condition report? [INSTRUMENTS - POCKET SUNDIAL]SEVIN, PIERRE. A silver "Butterfield dial" type sundial, in its original fitted case. Paris: Pierre Sevin, circa 1680. The oval dial is in silver, finely engraved, with black enameling, the dial marked "pour 49 degrez" (49° being Paris), with three concentric hour scales, a folding triangular gnomon adjustable to latitudes 40° to 60,° with a finely engraved bird and foliate designs, and with a rosette design at center, the reverse of the dial with a list of cities, their latitudes, and the maker's signature, the dial set on two silver feet; with a four-direction recessed compass, the steel needle mounted on a pivot, the compass face covered with flat glass, the reverse in silver with an engraved rosette design; housed in the original oval fishskin case, lined in fitted red velvet, with metal clasp and hinge. The case measures 2 1/2 x 1 7/8 inches (6 x 4.5 cm). The silver is quite tarnished, and would benefit from polishing; the case is sound, with minor wear to the exterior, and the velvet-lined interior rubbed and worn by the sundial in the expected places. Pierre Sevin manufactured scientific instruments of the highest quality in Paris from 1662 to 1685, earning himself the title Ingenieur du Roi. His clients included the Academie des Sciences, the Paris Observatoire, and the astronomer Jean Richer, who used Sevin's instruments during his 1671 voyage to Cayenne in French Guyana. This is a rare, silver, "Butterfield" style pocket sundial, finely engraved and enameled in black. This type of dial began to appear around 1677, first manufactured by the Paris-based clock and instrument maker, Michael Butterfield. "Butterfield dials" are defined as being portable horizontal sundials, with an elongated hexagonally shaped hour scale, and a folding adjustable gnomon decorated with a bird. They were an immensely popular style of timepiece, copied from the late 17th century onwards. Sundials by Pierre Sevin are held in various important institutional collections, such as The Louvre Museum and The Royal Museums, Greenwich. No condition report? [MAPS - ATLAS]DUFOUR, H. Atlas Universel Physique, Historique et Politique de Géographie Ancienne et Moderne. Paris: Armand le Chevlier, 1861. Contemporary red leather over spine and corners, marbled paper over boards, gilt black leather title label to upper board, spine lettered in gilt. 24 x 17 inches (61 x 43 cm); Title, with colored paper labels pasted to recto and verso, contents leaf, and 40 double-page maps by A. H. Dufour, engraved on steel by Ch. Dyonnet, hand-colored. Wear to extremities, the boards a bit scuffed and faded, pale spotting, a small chip at the bottom edge of Pl. 40, a sound, attractive, and rather well-preserved atlas. A fine example of a mid-nineteenth-century French school atlas, containing maps of ancient, historical, and modern geography, with a marked focus on France and its empire. A green printed paper label on the title page states that this atlas has official authorization to be used in France's public schools. It contains maps of France, Europe, the continents, and the World. Some highlights include a hydrographic map of the world and a large-scale joinable 4-sheet administrative map of France. No condition report?
