Davis (Richard), A New Map of the County of Oxford from an Actual Survey; on which are Delineated the Course of the Rivers and Roads, the Parks, Gentlemens Seats, Heaths, Woods, Forests, Commons &c. &c., pub. John Cary, 1797, title page signed by Richard Davis and numbered 86 in upper left corner, key map of Oxfordshire with original hand colouring and inset b & w town plan of Oxford, sixteen map sheets (including title page) all with original hand colouring, some water staining and slight off setting, each sheet approx. 690 x 510mm, new end papers, modern half calf with contrasting morocco label to spine, slim folio. All the subscribers copies of this map were signed and numbered by Davies. The highest number recorded is 159 suggesting an initial print run of less than 200 copies. This detailed and accurate map of Oxfordshire with its fine town plan of Oxford is Davis’s only contribution to English cartography, although he was a prolific surveyor of estates in and around Oxfordshire. Surveyed on a scale of 2 inches to 1 mile this map is widely regarded as an important land mark in large scale cartography. Brian Kentish. To the Nobility, Gentry & Clergy of Yorkshire, this Map of the County Constructed from a Survey Commenced in the year 1817 & Corrected in the Years 1827 & 1828 is respectfully dedicated by the Proprietors, April 21st. 1828, large folding map, sectionalised and laid on linen on three sheets, borders strengthened with contemp. green silk, original hand colouring, calligraphic title, engraved vignette of the North West View of York Cathedral, tables of explanation and of the altitudes of the Principal Mountains, occ. red ink stains, some off-setting, each sheet approx. 1840 x 730mm, contained in contemp. marbled calf solander box with contrasting red gilt morocco label to spine, slight wear at extrems. This map is often attributed to C & J Greenwood but carries no mention of their names. A bright example of this handsome large scale map. (1)

Property of a F1 racing mechanic (Lots 708 to 709). Phil ‘Sailor’ Boore joined the Frank Williams F1 team in 1974. Two years later it became Walter Wolf Racing and, as the team’s ‘tyre man’, he worked with Jody Scheckter and Keke Rosberg. In 1982 he joined McLaren and spent the next 18 years looking after the likes of Niki Lauda, Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard. He eventually retired in April 2000 having contributed to no fewer than nine Formula 1 Drivers World Championships. Where applicable the following lots are sold with the approval of McLaren International. The Coniston Copper Mines Letters of John Barratt, 1823-1834, manuscript letter copy book, bound in half morocco by Bernard C. Middleton [Although Copper has been mined at Coniston since as early as 1800BC, it was on a very small scale and in the late 18th century went into serious decline. In the 1830s John Barratt opened up the mines on an industrial scale, new deep shafts were sunk and the use of gunpowder brought about significant growth. The workforce rapidly increased from 20 men in 1820 to 5-600. A mineral line was opened in 1859 to carry the ore which had previously been boated down the lake. see lot 85]

An Oak Chiming Eight Day Longcase Clock with Centre Seconds, signed Jonas Barber, Winster, No.78, circa 1750, the case with swan neck pediment, turned columns with gilded capitals, arched trunk door flanked by fluted pilasters, rectangular base with canted corners and upon later feet, 13-inch arched brass dial with silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring, finely matted dial centre and scroll work and engraved figural mask, date aperture, centre seconds, engraved borders, arch with rolling moonphase for lunar scale and tidal indicators, triple weight driven movement with deadbeat escapement, striking the quarters with three hammers striking three bells and a further hammer striking a larger bell for the hours, movement front plate engraved No 78, 214cm high Jonas Barber Jnr (b.c.1718-1802) was one of the finest clockmakers in the North West. Circa 1748 he began numbering his clocks, engraving the serial number on the movement frontplate (and sometimes with the date of manufacture alongside). His clocks can therefore be dated using these numbers. Barber numbered to the mid 1400s until 1800 when his successor (and former journeyman) Henry Philipson continued the system. This clock is illustrated fig 7/10 in Loomes (Brian) Clockmakers of Northern England, pg 83-84. It is sold together with a Clock Magazine dated 1982 in Brian Loomes has written an article about this clock, and a service receipt dated 1981.
