Suffolk. Smith (William), A New Mapp of the County of Suffolk with the Post & Cross Roads & other remarks, according to the latest & best observations, pub. Henry Overton, 1713, hand coloured engraved map, elaborate strapwork cartouche and mileage scale, slight loss to central fold and margins, laid down on later card, 340 x 485mm. William Smith’s ‘anonymous’ maps were first published in 1602 and re-issued by Peter Stent, John Overton and finally Henry Overton. The plates had been considerably altered by the time this map was published. Only twelve counties were ever engraved and all the editions are scarce. (1)

De Zee Custen tusschen Dovere en Orfordts Ness daer Teemse de Vermaerde Rivire van Lonen, 3rd. state (of 4), Leiden, [1588], uncoloured engraved sea chart, elaborate cartouche, mileage scale and compass rose, numerous rhumb lines, the sea decorated with sailing ships and sea monsters, engraved by Johannes van Deuteaum, slight overall toning and water staining, vertical margins strengthened on verso, 330 x 500mm, Dutch text on verso. John Sudbury and George Humble, [1611], uncoloured engraved map, inset town plan of Worcester, elaborate strapwork cartouche and mileage scale, very slight staining to central fold, 385 x 510mm, English text on verso, mounted, framed and double glazed. A good dark impression with wide margins. (1)
* Mexico. A group of fifty-seven mounted albumen prints on seventeen leaves, c. 1875, the majority of Mexico interest, larger images (approx. 19 x 25cm), include the cathedral in Mexico City, panoramic view from the cathedral tower, viaduct on the Infernal Precipice, double engine peculiar to the line, curve on the Mittac Precipice, In the Maltrato Mountains, the viaduct at Soledat, Orizaba, etc., the remaining forty-four smaller images (approx. 15 x 21cm and similar), including Falls of the Rio Grande, the Plaza, Guadalajara, Maximillian’s Palace, Trees, plus two photos of a large leather-back turtle (weight 987 lbs) showing figures for scale, all identified in English to mounts beneath, folio. A Second World War German Officer`s "Bezard" Pocket Compass, in a white metal and black enamelled folding case of arched rectangular form, the outer case stamped DIRECTION run through with a right facing arrow over a calibrated scale, the base with raised lettering "Bezard-Kompass", enclosing a hinged light reflecting disc covering the dial.

A 3in scale model of a Suffolk dredging steam tractor, coal fired brass bound steel boiler with fittings including water gauge, shut off valves, pressure gauge, safety, blower and blowdown valves. Engine details include twin cylinders 1in bore x 2in stroke, Stephenson’s link reverse, displacement lubricator, whistle, disc crank driven feed pump and by-pass, disc flywheel and gear drive with single speed to rear axle and winch drum and cable. Chassis details include Ackerman steering, leaf springs, water tank with hand feed pump, pierced disc sheels, the rear with strakes, driver’s seat and food rests, coal bunker and other details. An exhibition quality 1in scale model of a Wallis & Stevens road roller ‘Advance’, built by the late Mr L.O.Gibbs of Hailsham, East Sussex having gas fired boiler with fitted sight glass, pressure gauge, steering wheel with direct shaft to bevel gear and worm steering. The twin cylinder engine with trunk guides, balanced crank, cab lever for Stephenson’s link reverse, hand brake, ratchet oiler, flywheel with gear driven water pump and return flow control valve to belly tanks, rivetwork, water drain point and safety valve. The model is finished in maroon, red and green paintwork with polished copper, brass and brightwork. The fitted corrugated canopy being sign written ‘L.O.Gibbs, Hailsham -East Sussex - Contractor’. Radio control equipment is built into the underside of the canopy and the model comes with a radio control hand set. Model 33cm high, 27cm wide, 60cm long
A 3in scale model of an S Type Marshall 5 nhp steam roller, built by Mr B Burrows of St Helens with steel boiler built by A J Glaze Ltd of Wolverhampton for Live Steam Models. The roller with single cylinder 2in bore by 21/2in stroke with trunk guide, safety valves, ratchet oiler, cylinder drain cocks operated from the driving position, regulator, sight glass, pressure gauge, water pump, injector, blower, disc flywheel, spoked steering wheel and brake fitted to back wheel. The model finished in green, red and black paintwork with polished brightwork. 50cm wide, 140cm long. Boiler History: Original test certificate from A J Glaze Ltd, Wolverhampton No 657, built November 1993. Hydraulic Test pressure 225 psi. Current boiler hydraulic test certificate from Northern Association of Model Engineers valid until the 17th of April 2011 at 180 psi working pressure. Steam test valid until 18th of April 2010 at 110 psi.

Engine details including twin cylinders with trunk guides, water pump with linkage to ratchet operated lubricator, bypass, gear levers and chain drive to rear axle, Chassis detail including channel section frame Ackerman steering, cast wheels with solid rubber tyres and brass hub caps, working leaf springs, hand operated back brake rear axle differential unit, water tank with hand feed pump. Flat bed with upholstered driver’s and passenger seat, cab roof, polished hardwood planking to lorry body on channel chassis frame. The wagon finished in lined blue livery, 56cm wide, 185cm long. No boiler history available. Inspection stand. Some parts have been removed for steam test, which never took place, canopy, tinwork and safety valves present.
An exhibition model of a David Brown 990 Agricultural Tractor, built to approximately one quarter scale by the late Mr L.O. Gibbs of Hailsham, East Sussex. The fully working 50cc engine was designed by the builder having four cylinders with plugs, cylinders being water cooled with pump, overhead valves and overhead camshaft, pressure oil supply to all moving parts, electronic ignition (no contact points) electric self start. It has a three bearing crankshaft, 1in diameter pistons with two rings and one scraper ring, single plate clutch working from gear lever. Gear Box: Three forward gears and one reverse, 4-1 reduction to differential in the back axle. The tractor is fitted with brakes, oil pressure gauges, full lighting and two spot lights for night working, powered from a 1in diameter alternator. Working power take-off pulley. Engine driven oil pump to work hydraulic arms at rear of tractor. The model is finished in David Brown colours and the radiator badge was supplied from the DBTC shop, 63cm high, 53cm wide, 37cm long
A very rare 18c boxwood scale rule by JOHN LORENZ Leeds, 18" x 3" wide with brass tips, the rule is calibrated on both sides with 22 scales, numbered 3 to 24 in the L/H column to denote graduations to the inch. The late Richard Knight explained that to use a scale the first two graduations must be ignored, the reason for this is obscure. Lorenz was known to have produced brass sextants and the curator of the Leeds Museum suggests he worked before 1790, the rule is in exceptional condition F
An 18th Century and later oak court cupboard, the moulded cornice above a lunette carved frieze and central floral carved panel flanked by two similarly decorated cupboard doors enclosing a shelf, further flanked by foliate carved and fluted column supports over a fluted carved frieze and foliate carved panelled doors with dragon scale carved stiles opening to reveal a single shelf flanked by Green Man style grotesque mask capitols over fluted side pilasters raised on a moulded plinth base, 173 cm wide x 179 cm high (ILLUSTRATED)
18th century Chinese porcelain cylindrical vase with trumpet shaped mouth, decorated in underglaze blue with a mountainous landscape, lakeside houses and boats, 7" high; also a small Chinese ginger jar and cover of baluster form decorated with prunus blossom on a blue scale ground, 6" high (2)
C[ourtauld] (S[ydne]y) Ferns of the British Isles 20 mounted albumen prints original green cloth blocked in gilt and black 8vo 1877 *** The plates each have a note of scale eg `one fourth natural size`. How the reductions were achieved is an interesting question; perhaps re photographing with a reducing lense.
A Chinese silver coloured metal field gun, circa 1900, a scale model as used during the Boxer Rebellion, the finely detailed gun with rotating wheels secured by wing hub screws to the axle and with ammunition boxes each side of the barrel supported by chains, set on adjustable elevation screw to the ebony cannon mount and with limber drawing mount, the removable barrel with touch hole and castellated muzzle and inscription to the top, translated from Chinese as the Dynasty of the Emperor at the time of the Rebellion, `Guangxu first year` - so dated 1875, 25.5cm (10") long, complete with ramrod and gun powder pourer/Provenance: The cannon was presented to Rear Admiral Sir Christopher George Francis Maurice Cradock KCVO CB RN (1862-1914) after commanding British, German/Prussian and Japanese sailors during the capture of the Taku Forts and the defeat of the Boxers. Sir Christopher was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1910, believed to be the youngest to reach this rank since Nelson. On 1st November 1914 Rear Admiral Sir Christopher Cradock died when his flagship and HMS Monmouth were sunk with all hands at the battle of the Coronel after orders were received to pursue and destroy the fleet of Admiral Maximilian Graf von Spee off the South American coast. The cannon passed to his cousin Guy Cradock and thence by decent and gift to the current owner/see illustration
