Lot 372

Eleanor Lines Red Sunset I Screenprint on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by AOAP About Eleanor is an English-Dutch artist born and raised in London. She graduated with a Masters in Fine Art Printmaking from the Royal College of Art in 2011. She now lives and works between Athens (Greece) and London. Geometry, pattern and structure found within architecture and foliage are all prevailing themes within her work which she explores through a variety of mediums such as screen printing, digital drawing, gouache paint, cyanotype and collage. In addition to her smaller scale practice, she undertakes large scale public commissions and has previously been commissioned by the Crown Estate and the Bow Arts Trust in London. After completing a residency in Greece in 2016, her practice was greatly inspired by the city of Athens and its modernist and Art Deco architecture. By isolating shapes found in, for instance, Art Deco metalwork, and reimaging these forms, she explores and deconstructs the fabric of the city. The strong Athenian light gives a sun kissed appearance to the place. The vivid sunset skies and surrounding Aegean Sea have all contributed to her vibrant colour palette, where colours and gradient blends interact with one another and create a sense of movement within the work. Education Royal College of Art, Fine Art Printmaking 2009 - 2011 University of Brighton, Fine Art Printmaking 2005 - 2008 Select Exhibitions/Awards March 2022 - IFCA Arts, Metanoia, Athens, Greece December 2021 - Kypselian Salon, Snehta, Athens, Greece November 2021 - Palm, Kypseli Print Studio, Athens, Greece November 2020 - Athens Laundry Bougada, Athens, Greece 2017 - Commissioned Public Art 'Q4' (Crown Estate/AHMM architects), Sherwood Street, London Gallery Representation The postcards submitted to 'Art on a Postcard' entitled 'Sunset' respond to a long heatwave during the Greek summer and deconstruct a previous print work which plays with the form of a wave. The dramatic skies at sunset displayed a spectrum of colours which varied evening to evening. Outbreaks of fire gave the skies a very unusual hue. The unique screen-printed postcards attempt to capture these colour fields in a simplified and abstract language. You must not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any works. In doing so, you endanger our relationships with artists, and directly jeopardise the charitable work we do.

Lot 376

Sophie Coe Coverack (Cornwall) Charcoal on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by AOAP About I find inspiration almost anywhere but particularly in nature. Whether it's the power of the sea, wind through a grove of bamboo, sunlight through a canopy, the detail and structure of a leaf. There's so much beauty around us, both the big views and the details, I'm in awe of it. I try to capture the mood, the wonder, the feeling of being there, the elements perhaps less visible with a passing glance. I have always loved design and creating things, and sometimes work collaboratively to solve a design brief for artwork specific to a project. Mostly though I work alone inspired by the beauty in nature, often with my own creative enquires: How to express the rain? Or the wind as it blows sand along a sea drenched beach... as it makes botanical shadows dance on a wall. How to express the movement of a wave or the still timeless eternity of a mountain... there's inspiration everywhere. Sophie Coe was born in the UK in 1971. She studied fine art and architecture and worked in the UK, Asia and Australia, before settling in London in 2009. Fine art was always a passion which over the years grew to take over as a full-time occupation. Sophie studied fine art at the Slade in London but is largely self-taught. She works with charcoal, paint and various printmaking techniques to create images mostly inspired by nature. The freedom in her mark making gives immediacy and energy to her work, which itself exudes the simple calmness and beauty of the environment that inspired it. Having a background in architecture gives her an in-depth understanding of buildings, interiors, client/designer relationships and collaborative design. Commissioned pieces have ranged in scale from 60cm to 6.5m wide. Her work sells worldwide for both private collections and commercial interiors. She lives and works in Twickenham. John Simpson Willow Ink and charcoal on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by AOAP About John Simpson's prints and drawings fuse image meaning and medium to explore our relationship with the natural world. The process and examination of drawing is at the core of his practice. Often abandoning the control of the studio and working with public collaborators, he embraces an element of chaos and the natural mutations which occur in printmaking. This symbiotic process is one way in which his work looks to biology to explore our relationship with nature. The frequent use of natural materials like earth and wood reflects both the subject and the wild nature of these works. John's latest drawings and prints have their origins in a time spent exploring local woodlands with his young twin daughters whilst seeking refuge from their city apartment. These works evolved from being continuously immersed in this environment. The process and materials directly relate to the physicality and texture of these hidden spaces. He has exhibited at major UK institutions as well as internationally with solo exhibitions in London, Los Angeles and Sao Paulo. He has led interactive printmaking and drawing projects at Spike Island, Bristol and at Tate Modern in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Lot 475

Hope Turnbull Waiting Monoprint on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by Millie Foster About Hope Turnbull, b. 1999, Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK, studied a BA from Edinburgh College of Art (2017-2021) and is currently completing her MA in Fine Art at City and Guilds of London Art School (2022-2023). Her large-scale oil paintings depict lived experiences, drawn and filtered through the memory of emotion to create psychologically charged domestic spaces that reference the history of representational painting: Hopper, Vermeer, Cassat. Mostly alone, or in a pair, the figures enact the routines of daily life, ironing, washing, sitting and thinking or watching television. Education 2021 BA (hons) Painting, Edinburgh College of Art Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork I have submitted two unique monotypes on paper. The works hope to capture quiet moments of contemplation: moments when our inner world is so intensely felt that our surroundings seem to disappear, a moment where we are simultaneously conscious and unconscious. I aim for the softly rendered paintings to slowly reveal themselves to the viewer, rhythmically drifting, shifting, with figure and space constantly intertwining through the layering of thinned oil paint. The narrative, autobiographical paintings spring from my daily life. I capture moments when I catch my mind drifting and focus upon the sensations within and the gestures of my body. Then, through the application of thinly layered transparent paint I aim for the material quality of the work to be in harmony with its subject - the subtle shifting of figure and space when the mind is occupied in those quietest moments of reverie.   You must not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any works. In doing so, you endanger our relationships with artists, and directly jeopardise the charitable work we do.

Lot 48

Laura Hope Eye Spy I, 2023 Mixed media on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by Verity Babbs About My work is centred around unspoken emotions and quiet inner lives. Created from my own staged photographs of models, it is often a response to memories, relationships and personal crisis. Through composition, cropping and reversing the image, I strive to convey an uneasy narrative that shines a light on subtle feelings that often hide in the shadows. With hints to another era, my figures live in a world that is both nostalgic and present. I sit on the fence between painting and drawing - feeling that 'painting' better describes my process but knowing that 'drawing' is my method of creation. My training as an illustrator as well as my time working as a memorial artist (hand etching onto granite) have cemented the importance of line and mark making in my practice. A combination of thick, harsh scribbles and precise, light touches alongside a unique translation of colour are the voices used to tell my stories. Looking through a crack in a door or spying through a keyhole was something I wanted to explore with these tiny works. The scale is much smaller than I usually work, so I decided to work to a crop rather than reducing the image. Crops fascinate me, especially in portraiture... Without all the features, can you still translate their expression? How are you being watched? Daisy Collingridge Facescape (Miniature 1) Textiles and wood on paper Signed on Verso 10.5 x 15 x 1.7cm (4 x 5¾ x ¾ in.) This lot has been curated by Millie Foster About Daisy is a multi-disciplinary work investigating the human form as the central theme. The work sits in a place of tension between, sculpture, performance and art. The 'flesh suits' are an exploration of fabric, form and flesh. Their tactile fabric bodies and inviting colour exaggerate the warmth and softness of flesh- these elements which signify a living thing. They are visceral. There is a desire to touch. Fabric offers skin like qualities that traditional sculpting materials do not have. Bethany Hadfield I See Her Hot Breath In My Sleep Acrylic on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by Millie Foster About Bethany Hadfield lives and works in London. She graduated from Wimbledon College of art in 2016 and in 2022 received an MA in painting from the RCA. Hadfield's practice co-exists in different dimensions, one confined to the screen, of rendered animations and digital images and the other inherently physical, consisting of large-scale oil paintings. Sketches are created on open-source 3D software, and are a result of various digital improvisations. The digital images are then translated to canvas with acrylic to eliminate gestural notions achieving a smooth artificial finish. The immediacy of 3D software is contrast to the gradual and intuitive process of painting to explore verisimilitude. As physical records of the image economy, they are formed from networked labour and collaborations with the machine. For Hadfield artistic creation is not individual but a mediation of one's role in collaboration and social interaction. "I work in the emancipatory realm of technology. Laura Hope Eye Spy III, 2023 Mixed media on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by Verity Babbs About My work is centred around unspoken emotions and quiet inner lives. Is it a menacing stare or a loving gaze?   You must not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any works. Rebecca Hardaker Appreciate me no.1, 2023 Watercolour pencil on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by Verity Babbs About Rebecca Hardaker's practice is an intersection between painting and drawing. Executed with an unabashed fondness for innocence, each canvas is an ensemble of abstract mark making and figures. Rebecca often never has a plan when she starts a new painting. One mark provokes another and so gives birth to a landscape of abstraction. She moves around the canvas, filling it with painterly strokes and line. The process is fast and intuitive, unencumbered by rules. Her palette is bright and dreamy. Just as she never sets out a plan, Rebecca doesn't cancel out mistakes. These are part of the composition, which is the artist's immediate translation of her cerebral vision giving way for to whimsical uncertainty. Laura Jane Scott Considered Interior paint on card Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.)   This lot has been curated by Katherine Kittoe About Laura Jane Scott is an artist working in minimalist, geometric abstraction and colour-field painting. Her desire for formal simplicity through geometric form and her striking use of colour enables her to produce work where painting explores a model of architectural form and where colour embodies a physical structure. The resulting work is a refined visual vocabulary of form and colour. "My aim is always to express an idea as simply and as elegantly as possible. To strip everything back to only what is necessary to communicate that idea. My work is primarily an exploration of balance, of positive and negative space, of presence and absence." Education Laura studied at Camberwell College of Arts and Ravensbourne University London. Select Exhibitions/Awards Laura's work has been exhibited widely over the past seven years in London, Edinburgh, New York and Hamburg and has featured twice in the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition. Gallery Representation Laura is represented by Kittoe Contemporary in London and frequently shows work with &Gallery in Edinburgh. She also sells work independently and accepts commissions for large scale installations. Statement about AOAP Submitted Artwork Laura has submitted two works to Art on a Postcard Winter 2023. The first is a miniature of her relief series 'Necessary Limits' which explores colour, balance and form within the confines of some self-imposed boundaries.   The second piece 'Considered' is a minimalist painting of saturated, clean-edged shapes using colours from Laura's signature palette and the component shapes that often appear in her work.   You must not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any works. In doing so, you endanger our relationships with artists, and directly jeopardise the charitable work we do.

Faith XLVII Untitled (1) Red Wax Crayon on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by Frankie Shea About Liberty's journey as an artist began on the streets of South Africa in 1997, as a young graffiti writer known as Faith47. She rose to prominence on the international street art scene before becoming widely recognised for her multidisciplinary artistic practice. Monumental and intimate, private and public, her artwork takes the form of murals, sculptures, video installations, tapestries and drawings. Deconstructing notions of value and place, investigating forms of domination, she explores the shapes of human perception. In quest of the divine, she expresses a longing for a deeper connection to the wisdoms of the natural world. There is too the active investigation and questioning of the human condition, its deviant histories and our own inherent existential search. She has shown at the Musée des Beaux-arts in Nancy, France, the Calais Museum of Fine Art, the Bernard Magrez Foundation in France, Mana Contemporary and the Brooklyn Museum, both in the USA. Faith XLVII Untitled (3) Red Wax Crayon on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.)   This lot has been curated by Frankie Shea About Liberty's journey as an artist began on the streets of South Africa in 1997, as a young graffiti writer known as Faith47. Rebecca Hardaker Appreciate me no.4, 2023 Watercolour pencil on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by Verity Babbs About Rebecca Hardaker's practice is an intersection between painting and drawing. Labrona Don't Let Me Go Acrylic ink and pen on paper Signed on Verso 10 x 15cm (3¾ x 5¾ in.) This lot has been curated by Frankie Shea About Labrona is one of Canada's most well-known street artists. He has been a fixture on the Canadian and international street art scene for close to twenty years. Labrona was born in Magog Quebec in 1972 but grew up in Ottawa Ontario. His artistic influences are many but he cites the countless nights spent painting with his friends as the most important. His father who is an architect and an accomplished artist played a huge role in his development. As a child he loved comic books and skateboarding and was greatly influenced by the colourful graphics that adorn the bottom of the boards. During university he spent a lot of time in the library pouring through books but was the most impressed with the works of the German expressionist, the Mexican muralist, Byzantine and Flemish religious iconography traces of which are found in his work. Labrona now spends most of his time creating works in the studio and doing mural commissions. Last summer he and his friend Troy Lovegates were hired by both the city of Toronto and Ottawa to create large scale public murals. He has also been involved in many international mural festivals lately which allows him to travel and paint large scale pieces. He has participated in the Living Walls festival in both Atlanta and Albany, the Wall Therapy festival in Rochester, the Painted Desert project in Arizona, the Montreal mural festival and many more. Education He moved to Montreal in 1997 to attend Concordia University's art program from which he graduated in 2001. It was during his time at art school that he was introduced to the Montreal graffiti scene. He has said that he received two educations at once, one in art school and the other in the train yards and on the streets painting with his friend and mentor, Canadian street art legend other aka Troy Lovegates. Select Exhibitions/Awards In 2004 Labrona appeared in one of the seminal books of its time on the street art and graffiti scene: Graffiti World. The book helped him receive wide recognition for his work and he was soon approached by galleries from around the world. He has exhibited his work in galleries all over Europe and North America and has had major shows in Los Angeles, Paris, New York, London and Montreal.   You must not reproduce, duplicate, copy, sell, resell or exploit any works.
