Susan Laughton (British Contemporary) Silverland I, signed and dated '07 verso, mixed media on canvas, 40 x 40cm Footnote:Susan Laughton’s long standing interest in landscape and architecture has always inspired her painting and drawing. Vernacular buildings, both rural and urban, domestic and functional are a source of geometric, architectural forms. More recently pieces of broken ceramics found in the fields near home on the edge of the Potteries in Staffordshire have brought a different scale of reference. A reductive approach to these sources is used to select and refine the intentional placement of linear and spatial elements. These are set against the more random physicality of different surfaces whether they are hand applied plaster or the grain of plywood that connect back to the built environment. Laughton worked in architecture for twelve years before returning to education to study art graduating with a BA Hons in 2002. She currently works from Vale Artists Studios in Cheshire. Death of Nelson and the Battle of the Nile: an exceptionally large creamware jug, early 19th centuryProbably Herculaneum, printed in black with an expansive naval battle 'ADM'L NELSON'S Glorious VICTORY near the MOUTH of the NILE Augt 1th [sic] 1798', the reverse with an oval print depicting 'THE DEATH of ADMIRAL LORD NELSON off CADIZ Octr 21th [sic] 1805', the monogram 'MR' printed in elaborate script and 'THE FARMERS ARMS' below the spout, 31cm highFootnotes:The uncommon scale of the jug allows for a very detailed view of the Nile. The moon shining through dark skies is a reminder that most of the battle was fought at night, something which must have made L'Orient ablaze even more dramatic. The same print is adapted to fit a smaller jug, in the Collection at Winterthur, inv. no. 1965.0069. See also the jugs illustrated by Alan Smith, Liverpool Herculaneum Pottery (1970), figs.46 and 56, which add weight to the Herculaneum attribution for the present lot and also lot 30.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
A rare Derby biscuit figure of Admiral Lord Howe, circa 1795Modelled standing look to his right, resting one hand on a cannon, a spyglass in the other, a shield and a sextant to one side of the naturalistic base, 28.4cm high, patch marks, incised crown, crossed batons and D marks, 'N 384' and repairer's markFootnotes:The large-scale British victory over the French on the 'Glorious First of June' was celebrated as Lord Howe's finest moment. Just weeks afterwards, in July 1794 correspondence between Derby's proprietor William Duesbury II and Joseph Lygo, manager of the factory's London warehouse, show that the former requested an image of the war hero so that a statuette could be modelled and put into production. In a series of letters Lygo recalls advice given by Lady Howe that they should use the portrait by John Singleton Copley, in her opinion 'the only good likeness there is' of her husband. Duesbury received a print of the portrait that October but in the meantime the modeller, most likely William Coffee, was able to start the figure from helpful descriptions forwarded by Lygo; 'My Lord Howe is a strong Bony man I think full six feet high and carries very little flesh'. See also Brian Bicknell's discussion on the modeller being Coffee rather than Stephan as previously suggested, The Derby Porcelain International Society Newsletter, No.28 (1993), pp.4-9.A coloured and gilt example of the figure is in the Collection at Upton Park, Warwickshire, inv.no. NT446215. Model number 384 was identified in 1898 by William Bemrose as 'Lord Howe'.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A black basalt bust of Admiral Lord Duncan, circa 1805Modelled in military uniform and gazing left, the plinth base incised 'DUNCAN' below naval trophies of war, 19.5cm highFootnotes:A similar but slightly larger bust in buff-coloured stoneware is marked 'Herculaneum' and is in the Victoria & Albert Museum, inv. no. 414:1119-1885. Although black basalt wares were produced at Herculaneum it is possible the mould was used by another contemporary factory explaining the slightly smaller scale of the present lot. It has been suggested that Pierre Stephan was responsible for the modelling of both the busts of Duncan and Jervis, see also lot 4 in this sale. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
