Europe, Austria or Hungary, ca. 1400 to 1425 CE. An original medieval illuminated manuscript on animal parchment cut from an early 15th century Choirbook. The page is adorned with an elaborate historiated initial "R" surrounded by a vine border. The lower interior depicts three guards asleep at Christ's tomb. Beneath them are the Three Marys arriving to find that Christ is Risen. Along the left of the initial is a column surrounded by heavenly clouds. The initial is illuminated in burnished gold and tempera colors. The vestiges of music display square notes on a four-line stave. The missing section probably portrayed the Risen Christ. The scale and ornateness of a manuscript reveal much about both the status of the manuscript and its owner. Manuscripts intended for everyday use or use by students or friars usually possessed very little illumination, and rarely ever elaborate historiated initials. By contrast, manuscripts that were commissioned by wealthy patrons or for an elite monastery oftentimes possessed gold or silver illuminations, historiated initials, and other flourishes. Clearly, this sumptous example replete with layered iconography an refined decoration, was intended for a special patron. Size: 8" L x 6.25" W (20.3 cm x 15.9 cm); in mat 14" x 12" (35.6 x 30.5 cm). Provenance: Ex- Estate of M. Reiniger, Chicago, IL; ex Goodspeeds Bookstore, Boston, MA Condition: The historiated initial "R" had a portion excised a long time ago which was placed with a piece of old animal parchment. A closed tear along the lower right. Some minor creasing as shown. Nevertheless, a wonderful example. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. Russia, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely rendition of "Our Lady of the Don," a 14th century Eleusa icon representing the Virgin Mary holding the baby Jesus, painted in egg tempera and gold leaf on wood, with red Cyrillic lettering identifying the figures. Here we see the traditional endearing scene of Mary cradling the Christ Child, both figures with expressive visages and pantomime-like gestures derived from the Byzantine style that dramatically express their undeniable bond. This example also includes a depiction of Mary's mother Saint Anne, of a much smaller scale, looking on the Virgin and Child from the left. Note how Saint Anne's body seems to float in space; this was a device used by Byzantine artists to symbolize figure's holiness and ethereal nature in paintings and mosaics. The origins of "our Lady of the Don" continue to be explored. It is believed that Theophanes the Greek painted the original (ca. 1382-1395 CE) which is currently in the collection of the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. A book from the Donskoy Monastery states that "Our Lady of Don" was intended as a gift from Don Cossacks to Dmitry Donskoy, presented the day prior to the Battle of Kulikovo (1380). The former existence of back slats indicates that this example dates prior to the 1880s. Size: 12.25" L x 10.75" W (31.1 cm x 27.3 cm) Provenance: Ex-Estate of M. Reiniger, Chicago, IL Condition: Expected surface wear with areas of crazing, remains of dripping wax from prayer use, areas of possible in-painting, some losses to wood particularly at peripheries. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #111582
Russia, ca. 19th century CE. A breathtaking antique Russian Orthodox bronze cross embellished with beautiful blue and white enamel. Beyond the exquisite aesthetic beauty of this piece, is its extensive iconographic program adorning the front side and lengthy Cyrillic prayer with more imagery on the back. On the front we see the crucifixion of the Son of God. Above this is Christ the Savior flanked by a pair of angels, below a skull representing Golgotha or Skull Hill, the location where Adam was reportedly buried and Christ was crucified. Turn it over, and the program continues with a prayer and engraved depiction of the Russian Orthodox cross. All finely cast, remarkably detailed, of a substantive scale and weight. A stunning work of religious art! Size: 14.25" L x 7.25" W (36.2 cm x 18.4 cm) Provenance: Ex-Estate of M. Reiniger, Chicago, IL Condition: Expected wear and patina. #111581
Latin America, Mexico, ca. 1950 CE. A dramatic ex-voto painted on heavy gauge tin depicting what appears to be a family of seven praying to Our Lady of San Juan de los Lagos (of the lakes) floating above them. To the right, the artist presents a tragic accident involving an open bed truck on a rural hillside. The driver apparently hit several individuals, probably children given their diminuitive scale. Despite the fact that the text is no longer legible, as they say, "A picture is worth a thousand words!" Size: 7" L x 10.5" W (17.8 cm x 26.7 cm).Ex-votos, are devotional paintings that bear a semblance to retablos, only they also include a written narrative offering thanks to a saint for coming to a family’s aid. The term is short for the Latin phrase ex voto suscepto meaning “from the vow made.” Oftentimes, gratitude is expressed for curing an ill child, expediting the recovery of an elderly family member, the safe return of a soldier, or the rescue of a victim from some horrific accident or crime. The petitioner dedicates a small painting with a brief written testimonial to a beloved patron saint for granting a miracle. These hand-written stories together with their expressive visual scenes can be quite touching and dramatic. Provenance: Ex-Historia Gallery, Santa Monica, CA. Condition: Text not legible, but painting still vivid. #109725
