CIRCLE OF PAUL MAITLAND (1863-1909) RIDERS ON ROTTEN ROW, HYDE PARK oil on canvas 45 cm by 62 cm; 18 in by 24 1/2 in Provenance with Anthony D'Offay Gallery (label on stretcher) This intriguing early twentieth century view of Hyde Park is probably by an artist in the circle of Paul Maitland and Albert Ludovici who did very similar views at around the same date. It bears some comparison with the work of William Evelyn Osborn (1868-1906), who executed similar London views on the same scale.
Good English mahogany single fusee 10" wall dial clock signed Brockbank & Atkins, London, no. 1959, within a reeded turned surround, the high quality and unusual movement with underslung lever platform escapement with monometallic balance and Harrison's maintaining power, to the top of the back plate there is a curved scale for time regulation, below, a hand setting screw and pointer on a silvered disc calibrated in minutes for time setting, next to this is the anti-clockwise winding square, the back plate is also signed Brockbank & Atkins, London, no. 1959, within a mahogany case with original rear door but later fitted to a hinged back board, with shaped extensions for wall mounting *It is possible that this clock would have been mounted in a ship's bulkhead for its accurate timekeeping

HICKS, MAKER, LONDON, the case with five panel bevel-glazed cover and stepped ogee moulded base with rounded angles and frieze drawer containing spare charts, 38cm (15ins) wide James Joseph Hicks is recorded in Banfield, Edwin BAROMETER MAKERS AND RETAILERS 1660-1900 as working from Hatton Garden, London from 1861 until after 1900. He was a committed Catholic who presented various meteorological instruments to the Vatican receiving the title of Knight Commander of St. Gregory for his services.
