Surveying - 10cm diameter prismatic surveying compass signed on the lid Surveying - F B & S (1932) Ltd with a broad arrow and B 1890. Aluminium compass ring.Brass body. Tripod socket under the base. Probably mid-20th century. Possibly made by Francis Barker & Son (1932) Ltd.. Leather carry case stamped with broad arrow; Two India pattern clinometers each with leather case stamped F.LTD MKVI and 192 below broad arrow. One made by UIC for the British Government (probably the War Department) stamped B8046. The other stamped Unicam B3602 Mark VI 1940 They were used to measure the elevation or declination of buildings and topographical features, mounted on a plane table and levelled using the screw behind the back sight. The aperture in the foresight can be raised or lowered with the thumb wheel until the cross wire coincides with the top of the feature being measured. There are a degree scale (to the left) and a tangent scale (to the right) on the front sight which enable the height to be calculated or found from tables if the horizontal distance is known.
Surveying - A Watts standard dumpy level by E.R.Ewing & Sons, London, No.51182 in wooden case; Two India pattern clinometers One stamped MkVI No.B8929, CMCo with leather carry case. The other stamped MkVI No.B9047 CMCo. They were used to measure the elevation or declination of buildings and topographical features, mounted on a plane table and levelled using the screw behind the back sight. Sir George Brown and a portion of the Light Division Staff, a nine-man group portrait in civilian attire. (A soldier since 1806, Brown commanded the Light Division throughout the Crimean War). Assorted images by amateur and commercial photographers, including Francis Bedford and James Robertson; subject matter being a variety of topographical, portrait and other subjects, (including Robertson: the Crimean war) and various locations in UK, Malta, Gibraltar and the Mediterranean. In addition, approximately 200 cartes de visite of British and European royalty, family, topographical, army officers various, Crimean war generals, etc., and a rare image of a white- bearded Roger Fenton c.1865. A Newhall bone china cockle plate pattern 1944, basket moulded rim, painted with reserves of flowers, the well with a similar band of flowers within gilded blue bands circa 1820-30, 12.5 cm diameter (some rubbing), and two hard paste teabowls, patterns 78 and 173, one fluted, both painted predominantly in pink with flowers and scale borders. CIJ (France) Alfa Romeo P2 Racing Car, c.1930: impressive large scale pressed steel car, clockwork motor drives rear wheels, silver with faint racing number `2` to front grill, spoked wheels with hub caps and `Pneu Michelin` tyres, earlier version with brake drums, on off switch to base and stamped `Made in France`. Length 53cm. Repainted, steering and handbrake linkages missing, includes key and a diagram featuring the models dimensions drawn in recent years by a gentleman from the National Motor Museum. Overall a good scarce example, which has remained in the same family since it was first purchased.
