He believed that embracing Gothic architecture and design was a return to a more virtuous and spiritually rich past, countering what he perceived as the decay of his contemporary society.Fuelled by Pugin's advocacy, the Gothic Revival had a profound impact on the broader design landscape of the 19th century. Indeed, as reflected by the present lot, many of Pugin’s design motifs, such as intricate carvings and pointed arches, were widely borrowed by contemporary craftsmen, reflecting both the influence of Pugin and the moral sensibilities of the day.
