JOSEF HOFFMANN (Brtnice, Czech Republic, 1870 - Vienna, 1956).Jugendstil side cabinet, ca. 1900.Mahogany wood.Measurements: 113 x 31 x 26 cm.An auxiliary piece of furniture in the Jugendstil style, Central European modernism, made of mahogany wood and characterised by the clean lines and the play of geometric volumes typical of Jugendstil, which is combined with a vertical structure, based on closed and open spaces, which is common to the whole of Europe at this time. The base appears open, raised on two stipe legs with horizontal carved grooves, with a closed moulded base, like a plinth, and a shelf at mid-height. The central area is occupied by a closed cupboard with a translucent dark glass door, moulded with an irregular organic-looking irregular finish. Finally, above the cupboard is an open shelf with a barred base and truncated pyramid-shaped finials to match the legs.An architect and industrial designer, Josef Hoffmann studied at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna, where he was a pupil of Carl Freiherr von Hasenauer and Otto Wagner, whose theories of functional, modern architecture would profoundly influence his work. He won the Prix de Rome in 1895, and the following year he joined Wagner's office, collaborating with Olbrich on some projects for the Metropolitan. He established his own office in 1898, and taught at the School of Decorative Arts in Vienna between 1899 and 1936. He was also a founding member of the Viennese Secession. In 1900 he travelled to London, where he came into contact with the English school and discovered Mackintosh. On his return, he set up a workshop for the production of objects based on designs by artists of the Secession, and thus the Wiener Werkstätte was born, a workshop which had a great influence on 20th-century industrial design. By 1903, production began on an international scale. In the course of his life, Hoffmann produced a variety of projects for buildings and furnishings, and exhibited his creations all over the world. He is currently represented in the MAK and the Leopold Museum in Vienna, the Metropolitan and MoMA in New York, the Brohan in Berlin, the Courtauld Institute in London and the Victoria & Albert in London, among many others.

1901 RENAULT TYPE D 4 ½ HP TWO SEATER VOITURETTEEngine No. 4369THE MOTORCAR OFFEREDFounded by Louis Renault and his brothers Marcel and Fernand in 1898, the company that would become France's biggest automobile manufacturer started humbly enough, with a solitary 1¾hp De Dion-engined prototype, the sprung rear axle of which would soon be copied by many contemporaries. Production at the Billancourt factory was soon under way on a large scale, demand for its products being enhanced by the performance of Renault cars in the great inter-city races so popular in France at the turn of the 19th Century. This charming little early Renault, which dates from within the very first years of the production of this famed marque was acquired new by the current family owners through the local agents for the brand, Loppart et Cie of Liège. The story of this agency is actually quite fascinating in its own right, for Lucien Loppart was the very first of such arrangements that Renault made to broaden their business outside of France. Loppart himself, which some references cite as 'the son of a Liège straw hat maker' was already preoccupied by the potential of the burgeoning motorcar industry and had progressed from building and selling bicycles to designs on making his own Loppart car, which he would do with the financial assistance of E. Orban-Voit. On November 3, 1900 he changed tact and wrote to Renault Frères requesting the licence to sell their product in his home country. Discussions continued for a few months, before finally on January 23, 1901 he was granted his wish and a contract signed. The timing of this agreement confirms that the very first possible cars that Loppart would have been able to supply were cars such as this offered today, which the French business referred to as their Type D. It was a progression of their 1900 model, only now its performance was boosted by an enlarged De Dion Bouton of 4½ hp (Aster engines were also now offered) and to make driving simpler they had adopted a steering wheel over a tiller all in all providing a more modern looking machine. In July 1901 'La France Automobile' referred to the Type D Renault as being a very elegant and practical reduction of the large type of automobile carriage, of which it has all the advantages of comfort, sweetness and elegance without the inconveniences of expense, weight, consumption, bulk and price. The Type D was launched at the Salon de l'Automobile held in the Grand Palais in Paris at the end of January 1901 and homologated with the Ministry of Mines (responsible for approving new car models) in February 1901.Registered for the road with Belgian plate 1831, which sits in the 1901 sequence of issue, the motor industry moved quickly in its formative years, and when one considers that newer and more advanced automobiles were to arrive in the household within a couple of year...
