Walker (J. & C.). The Indian Atlas, Published According to Act of Parliament by James Horsburgh, Hydrographer to the Honble. East India Company, 1st Feb 1827. Engraved by J. & C. Walker, 2 vols., 1827-30, twenty-four maps on a scale of four miles to the inch, sectionalised on linen, (unfolded size approx. 40 x 26 in), hand-col in outline-British Territory marked in red, Independent States in green, the rest are under British Protection; the maps are numbered on the verso 2-25 (no. 1 being the Index to the Indian Atlas); contemp. half calf, covers detached and backstrips deficient, contemp. ownership signature of Lieut. Col. James to front f.e.p. of vol. 1, 4to The index map conforms to the description given in Phillimore's 'Historical Records of the Survey of India' vol 3., p.286. On the Index sheet the maps in the two volumes are shaded red as the Surveyor General in India, and are all (but two) that were available at the time the Atlas was put together. The two sheets coloured in the Index but not present are nos. 69 & 70 around Pannah to the south-east of Delhi. The surveyors involved are identified on each sheet, these include Col. C. Mackenzie, Capts. J.A. Hodgson, J.D. Herbert, J. Garling, B.S. Ward, W.S. Webb, Bedford, Jones, Lieuts. Wilcox, Bedingfield, T. Fisher, R. Boileau Pemberton, P.E. Connor, Mountford, W. Scott. The East India Company was great exercised about the lack of sufficiently reliable maps of its dominions and contemporaries described this work as 'the greatest geographical work ever undertaken... Blaeu (Joan), Nova Virginiae Tabula, [1655], engraved map with old hand colouring and gum arabic, strapwork title and scale-of-distance cartouches, inset scene of a Native American feast, plate dimensions 375 x 482 mm, Latin text to verso Tooley pp.161-162. Originally by Jodocus Hondius after John Smith's map. Blaeu purchased the plate in 1629 and altered the imprint to reflect the new ownership. (1)

Original mid 18th century manuscript estate plan, drawn in ink and colours on vellum, the title within a plain rectangular border reading 'A Plan of the Manor of Grinton and Part of the Manor of Healaugh, the Manor of Arkengarthdale, the Manor of Fremington, the Verge of the Manors of Merrick and Ellerton and Several Manors in Wensleydale. N.B. The Mountains is Shaddowed, The Rivers and Rivulets are Blue, The Dotted lines divide the Moors, the Yellow Inclosures is Priory Land, The Green Inclosures Customary Land, the Red Inclosures Crown Land, the Brown Inclosures Free Land, the Orange Holy Land', compass rose, scale of distance surmounted by dividers, many fields and plots numbered, some creasing and dust soiling, a few brown marks, the sheet measuring 655 x 860 mm A fine example of an 18th century estate plan with the colours exceptionally bright. Many features of interest are marked on the map including numerous lead mines, for which the area is well known. (1)
