Bryan Wood and lithographed by Standidge & Co., London, on the scale 6 chains to an inch, comprising the Parishes of Llansoy, 1842; Micheltroy (on 2 sheets), 1845; Raglan (on 2 sheets), 1843; Gwernesney (mounted on linen), 1843; Llangeview, 1843; and Bettws Newidd, 1843; plus an additional original pen-and-ink plan, believed to be of Monkswood; various sizes, the sheets varying between 1090 x 760 mm and 760 x 550 mm, some soiling and creasing at the edges, four of the maps with the accompanying manuscript tabular reference books, giving details of land owners, occupiers, reference number on the map, names and description of the land, state (arable, pasture, wood, garden, etc.) and quantity; two books per map, one listed numerically by map reference, the other alphabetically by landowner, with the books only relating to the Parish of Llanishen, without the map, one of the books in printed form, with a printed title-page with imprint of Shaw & Sons Printers and Publishers of the Books and Papers of the Tithe and Factory Commissions, with the indelible stamp of the Tithe Commission, repeated in one other book, the volumes generally stained, with some wear, in wrappers, small folio. 19th Century mahogany bowfront stick barometer by Adie of Edinburgh having reeded pediment and cistern, doubled beaded edges, the silvered register plate signed A J Adie, Edinburgh, the top with detachable key to adjust the vernier scale and to adjust the level of mercury, 102.5cm high - Alexander James Adie (1775 - 1858) was a highly acclaimed maker of scientific instruments and patented his sympiesometer in 1818. Adie was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1819 - see illustration

A George III carved mahogany sofa, circa 1770, in the manner of Thomas Chippendale, with serpentine back, seat and scroll arms, on eight cabriole legs with acanthus carved terminals and scroll toes, 212cm wide (damage, repair, lacking scroll toes to outer back legs) Provenance: Purchased by the current owner from Dreweatt's sale of the property of Sir Francis Burdett's Will Trust, 21st May 1986. Literature: Country Life.Ramsbury Manor, p468-477, 9th October 1920. This sofa is illustrated on page 468. Christopher Gilbert. The Life and Works of Thomas Chippendale. Studio Vista/ Christies 1978. By the 18th century the Burdett family held land and estates in Berkshire, Wiltshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Staffordshire. The principal seats were in Derbyshire at Foremark Hall near Repton, and after about 1790, Ramsbury Manor in Wiltshire. Sir Robert Burdett, 4th Bart. (1716-1797) built the present hall at Foremark. Sir Robert commissioned Thomas Chippendale to produce furniture for the new house. The scale of the commission is revealed by the records kept that between February 1766 and April 1774 he paid Chippendale a sum of ú1228/16/6 (ú1014/14/0 of which was paid for the year 1769 alone). Although no certain attributions to Chippendale were made concerning the furniture in the sale of 1986, several of the pieces, including this sofa, present themselves as prime candidates of being produced as part of the Chippendale commission. The various elements of the design and carving of this sofa, with its serpentine mahogany frame carved with rococo motifs, bears particular similarities to a suite (including a pair of sofas) supplied by Chippendale to the Earl of Dumfries for Dumfries House in 1759 (See Gilbert. pages 195, 133 & 137) The design of this sofa and the Dumfries House example are derived from plate 22 (dated 1759) in the third edition of The Gentleman and Cabinet Makers Director. The design of Chippendale's 'French' chairs such as these, was ingeniously adapted to the taste and wealth of his clients by the subtle use of carved ornament , adapted to suite the decor of the room in which they were to be placed.

An unusual mahogany lever dial timepiece Brockbank & Atkins, London, circa 1830 The substantial four-pillar single fusee back-wound movement with Harrison's maintaining power and massive underslung lever platform escapement with monometallic balance and curved silvered regulation scale to rear edge, the backplate with hand setting screw and pointer for a silvered disc calibrated for minutes above signature Brockbank & Atkins LONDON 1959, the similarly signed 10 inch cream painted Roman numeral dial with gilt hands within fixed cast brass bezel and turned wood surround, the rectangular box case with stepped top and hinged rear door, 29cm diameter. Evidence to the sides of the case and the fact that it has a rear door for winding and setting up of hands suggests that this clock was designed to be fixed to a screen probably in a semi-public building, perhaps a bank. The partnership between George Atkins and the firm of Brockbanks is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as existing between 1815 and 1835 predominantly making marine chronometers.
A Continental silver and faux red shell pair-cased quarter-repeating clock watch with alarm Unsigned, late 18th century The frosted gilt fusee verge movement with foliate pierced and engraved balance bridge, engraved regulation scale and four columnar pillars dividing the plates, with two hammers for quarter repeat and a third for the alarm sounding on a bell mounted within the rear of the case, the white enamel Arabic numeral dial with asterisk minute markers, gilt hour and minute hands and blued steel alarm pointer, the inner case with a border of ring-turned piercings to rear cover, the outer case with similar piercings to rear cover and front bezel, 11.5cm diameter, in a later English leather-covered carrying case.
A fine George III gilt brass mounted mahogany musical bracket clock George Suggate, Halesworth, circa 1775 The substantial six-pillar triple fusee movement with verge escapement and playing a choice of four tunes on eight bells with thirteen hammers on the hour or at will and striking the hour on a further bell, with foliate scroll engraved backplate and 8 inch brass break-arch dial with calendar aperture to the matted centre within an applied silvered Roman numeral chapter ring with Arabic five minutes and foliate scroll cast spandrels to angles, the arch with chime/not chime and strike/not strike subsidiary dials with foliate scroll engraved centres flanking shaped recessed silvered nameplate SUGGATE, HALESWORTH beneath arched tune selection scale with moveable pointer to upper edge, the figured mahogany bell-top case with five leaf and berry cast finials above hinged handles and foliate scroll cast rectangular frets to sides, female caryatid applied angles and on moulded base with leafy scroll and cartouche cast mount to the pierced apron, on foliate cast bracket feet, 61cm high overall. George Suggate is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working in Halesworth, Suffolk 1767 - early 19th century. The four lively tunes played by this clock are A Dutch Dance, Britton's Strike Home, 104 Psalm and Lady Coventry's Minuet, all these tunes, with the possible exception of A Dutch Dance, were very popular and regularly feature on musical clocks of this date. The complexity of the movement and the quality of the case indicate that this would have been a very expensive clock thus was probably made to order for a wealthy local landowner.
