Bradley (Edward), "Cuthbert Bede". Studies of Figures Original and Selected, an album of original drawings and watercolours, together c.37 studies of varying sizes on 20 sheets (each 190 x 283mm.), some relating to Holme School, Hampshire, includes 'Bird Boys The Faithless Sentinel', watercolour over pencil, c.155 x 205mm., initialled and dated in pencil, 1850; 'At Holme School', watercolour over pencil, c.160 x 228mm., dated in ink 'Decr 29th: 1850'; 'From life. Holme School. ?Hunt', watercolour over pencil, c.145 x 105mm., titled and dated in ink, 1850; and 'Blowing a Cloud', pen and black ink, c.165 x 215mm., scene of three gentlemen smoking in a drawing room, captioned in ink 'From Life. "Blowing a Cloud". These figures are not drawn to a relative scale', n.d., [1850], some offsetting, occasional spotting, contemporary calf-backed decorative limp boards, stained, small oblong 4to, 1850. ⁂ Edward Bradley (1827-1889), English clergyman and novelist, best known for his tale of an Oxford undergraduate The Adventures of Mr. Verdant Green, written under the pseudonym of Cuthbert Bede. The illustrations for this and his subsequent works were done by himself. The present album comes with a presentation note 'With kind Xmas wishes for all at Edgar House. Xmas Eve 1891', with a ms. list of 'Cuthbert Bede's works' recto. Also included are two of Bradley's engraved armorial bookplates.
Ireland.- Ortelius (Abraham) Eryn - Hiberniae, Britannicae Insulae, Nova Descriptio - Irlandt, map of Ireland, with north oriented to the right, strap-work title and scale cartouches, with a ship off the northern coastline, engraving on laid paper with indistinct watermark, fine early hand-colouring heightened with gold, platemark 355 x 485 mm. (14 x 19 in), sheet 395 x 545 mm. (15 1/2 x 21 1/2 in), French text verso, central vertical fold with repaired splitting and reinforced verso, several marginal repaired tears and careful repairs to worm holes found within map, exposure lines, toning and surface dirt, unframed [Antwerp, 1584 or slightly later].Literature:VdB 22⁂ Based on Mercator's 1564 wall map of the British Isles, it is the first map of Ireland to include any geographic details.
Yorkshire.- Barnsley plans.- Kendray (F[rancis?]) 15 original pen and ink plans of Barnsley and vicinity on paper, most with partial wash or outline hand-colouring, the first with small cartouche of two winged figures holding the title banner, two with A Scale of Chains, a couple with later pencil annotations, the last 2 spotted, contemporary half calf with gilt-lettered red morocco title label to upper cover, rebacked, rubbed, folio, Barnsley, 1800.⁂ A rare record of the South Yorkshire town at the turn of the 18th/19th century executed by a member of an important local family, after whom an area and hospital are named. There are several later Francis Kendrays recorded, but we have been unable to verify for certain that this work is by an earlier Kendray of that name, though this seems likely. Each map measures 370 x 225mm.
A scratch-built live steam 3.5in gauge scale model of British Railways standard class 9F 2-10-0 locomotive and tender, no. 92220 'Evening Star', BR unlined Brunswick green livery bearing the number 9220 with cast name plates on the smoke deflectors, loco length 81.5cm, 126.5cm overall'Evening Star' was the last steam locomotive built for the nationalised undertaking, British Railways, at Swindon. It was outshopped in March 1960 and withdrawn in 1965 before being stored for preservation. It is currently on display at the National Railway Museum, York. Condition Report: Paintwork with some wear, otherwise seemingly complete.
A pair of German World War One Trench Art mantel spill vases, each salvaged from a pair of Patronenfabrik Karlsruhe Kp. 5. 18. shell cases, well-engraved in the Chinese taste with precious objects, jardinières of flowering peonies and chrysanthemums, further foliage and butterflies, below a wrigglework S-scroll border, the base with a lotus and foliate demi-lunes on a scale border, 41cm high, the bases dated Aug. 1917 and Juni. 1918, (2)
