Hill circa 1979.Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 30 May 1996, lot 237 (as 'The Battle of the Saints, 1782' by James Martin Hilhouse).Private collection, UK (acquired from the above sale).ExhibitedBristol, City of Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, Bristol's Marine Artists, 17 November 1982 - 15 January 1983, no.38, illustrated on p.58.LiteratureF. Greenacre, Marine Artists of Bristol - Nicholas Pocock 1740-1821 Joseph Walter 1783-1856, Bristol, 1982, p.56-58, pl.38.J.C.G. Hill, Shipshape and Bristol Fashion, 1983, p.7, illus. between pp.2 and 3E.H.H. Archibald, The Dictionary of Sea Painters of Europe and America, Woodbridge, 2000, p.166, illus. p.357, pl.295.The present work is a collaboration of James Martin Hilhouse, one of Bristol's eminent shipbuilders of the 18th Century and the celebrated Bristol marine artist Nicholas Pocock. It was originally one of a pair, with the other work depicting the close of the Battle of the Saintes, which is now in the collection of the Bristol Museum & Art Gallery.Hilhouse was a skilled naval draughtsman and 16 of his drawings are also in the collection of the Bristol Museum & Art Gallery. However, according to Francis Greenacre in his book Marine Artists of Bristol 'no other oil paintings by Hilhouse are known and the drawings, however good they may be in the eyes of a naval architect or engineer, suggest no special painterly ability. Both paintings are not only very close in style to Pocock, they are also far too proficient in technique for an artist of no known experience in the medium. It seems likely, therefore, that Pocock was commissioned by Hilhouse to transfer and to recompose onto canvas Hilhouse's own outline conceptions on paper.'Lord Rodney's glorious victory over the French fleet off Guadeloupe on 12th April 1782 is known to history as the Battle of the Saintes. Towards the end of the American War of Independence, by which time both France and Spain had allied themselves to the colonists' cause in the hope of gaining territory at England's expense, the French campaign in the Caribbean had already been disturbingly successful. When, in the spring of 1782, the French made ready to mount an offensive against Jamaica, Admiral Lord Rodney realised that a full-scale fleet action was his only means of stopping them. The French fleet, under the Comte de Grasse, weighed from Fort Royal, Martinique, on 8th April; Rodney intercepted it and a partial engagement took place the following day. Outwardly De Grasse had the advantage but soon lost it and the battle developed into a running fight which lasted three days. On the morning of 12th April, Rodney brought the French to action off Les Saintes, a group of small islands in the channel between Guadeloupe and Dominica. Initially adopting the traditional strategy, Rodney then bewildered the French by piercing their line of battle in two places and threw them into utter confusion. Before long their flagship, the 104-gun Ville de Paris, was surrounded and forced to strike her colours, and even though a number of ships managed to escape, it was nevertheless a decisive defeat for the French which saved the valuable island of Jamaica from invasion. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Willem van Mieris (Leiden 1662-1747) Wooded Landscape with Figures, showing a wooded landscape with two women, with inscription 'W. vanMieris Fec' to the middle of the bottom, black chalk, black chalk framing lines, with other drawings to verso 25.5cm x 19.5cm Willem van Mieris was a Dutch painter born in Leiden in 1662, and he died in 1747. He was the son of Frans van Mieris the Elder, a renowned painter and founder of the Leiden school of fijnschilders or "fine painters." Willem trained with his father and his brother, Jan van Mieris, who was also a successful painter. Like his father and brother, Willem specialized in small-scale, highly detailed genre scenes and portraits, often depicting middle-class interiors and the daily life of Dutch citizens. He was particularly skilled at capturing textures and fabrics, and his paintings often feature richly decorated rooms and costumes. Willem's style was heavily influenced by his father's work, but he also drew inspiration from other artists of the Dutch Golden Age, such as Johannes Vermeer and Gerard Dou. His paintings are characterized by their precise brushwork, luminous color, and attention to detail. Despite his artistic talents, Willem van Mieris struggled with financial difficulties throughout his life. He had to sell many of his paintings to support his family, and he never achieved the same level of success as his father or brother. Nevertheless, he was highly respected by his contemporaries, and his work is still highly regarded today for its technical skill and beauty. Some of Willem van Mieris' most famous works include "The Duet," "The Fish Seller," and "The Spinner." His paintings can be found in major museums around the world, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Louvre in Paris.
