Uluka by Sally Chinea. Sponsored by Associated British Ports (ABP)Artist:              Sally ChineaA mandala is a design, that generally has one central point from which an array of repeated patterns or shapes radiate from. They are often used as a focus for meditation; increasing calmness and relaxation. My mandala includes symbols, colours and patterns in each layers to represent love, loyalty, family, guidance, support and care, to name a few! To me owls represent wisdom, knowledge, change and transformation, As we go through trying times, especially with recent events, we develop a deeper understanding of the ties that bind us all on a global scale. We need to take time to slow down, examine our lives, to reflect, and to transform, to look after our environment and to care for each.Feathers = Communication. Hearts = Love. Hands = Care & Support. Sunflowers = Loyalty. Leaf = Growth, Life & Nature. Circles & Dots = Unity, Hope & Mother Earth. Stars = Guidance & Heroes. Uluka (Sanskrit for Owl) is wrapped in a decorative cloak, created from a geometric mandala which holds a great deal of symbolism. https://www.sallychinea.com/Sponsor:         Associated British Ports (ABP) This sculpture is sponsored by Associated British Ports (ABP) - the UK’s leading ports group with a network of 21 ports across the UK. ABP handles around one-quarter of the nation's seaborne trade, contributing £7.5 billion to the economy every year and supporting 119,000 jobs. ABP is working to drive growth in the coastal communities in which it operates. https://www.abports.co.uk/

Léger.' in the weave (lower right) and the Atelier Tabard Frères & Soeurs monogram in the weave (lower left); numbered '2/6' and with the Atelier Tabard Frères & Soeurs label showing the reference number '879' (on the reverse)hand-woven Aubusson wool tapestry195.7 x 394.1cm (77 1/16 x 155 3/16in).Conceived in 1953, this tapestry executed by the Atelier Tabard Frères & Soeurs in 1962 in a numbered edition of 6, of which only 4 were realised.Footnotes:ProvenanceAtelier Tabard Frères & Soeurs, Aubusson.Nancy Oakes Collection, London and The Bahamas (acquired from the above circa 1962).Private collection, London (by descent from the above).Exhibited(Possibly) Nice, Palais de la Méditerranée, F. Léger, tapisseries, ceramiques, bronzes, lithographies, 20 July - 30 September 1962.LiteratureExh. cat., F. Léger et les arts décoratifs, Biot & Aubusson, 2002-2003 (another edition illustrated p. 34).G. Bauquier, Fernand Léger, catalogue raisonné de l'oeuvre peint, 1952-1953, Paris, 2013, no. 1492 (the painted version illustrated p. 57).Executed on a monumental scale, Composition abstraite is one of the most iconic tapestries Fernand Léger ever created. The design for this work was based on a study for Projet pour une peinture murale which Léger created in 1953. The tapestries, however, were executed by the Atelier Tabard Frères et Soeurs in Aubusson in 1961 and 1962, after the artist's death in 1955. Although six examples were scheduled for the edition, only four were realised. The present work was acquired in the year of execution by Nancy Oakes, daughter of Canadian gold mining tycoon Sir Harry Oakes. Her family name and relationship with British Hollywood actor Richard Greene made her a popular public figure and her glamorous appearance was featured in numerous media outlets across the globe throughout the 1940s and 1950s. Oakes was very much a cosmopolitan socialite, and her eventful life led her to numerous countries, before she ultimately settled between London and The Bahamas. Composition abstraite remained in her personal collection until her death in 2005, whereafter it was bequeathed to the present owner. Another version of Composition abstraite was commissioned by the artist's wife together with George Bauquier, the initiator of the Musée national Fernand Léger, in Biot, where it is currently housed. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: AR W TPAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium.W Lot is located in the Bonhams Warehouse and will only be available for collection from this location.TP Lot will be moved to an offsite storage location (Cadogan Tate, Auction House Services, 241 Acton Lane, London NW10 7NP, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue. * JOHN MACLAUCHLAN MILNE RSA (SCOTTISH 1885 - 1957),GARDENS, PARISoil on board, signed and dated '22image size 35cm x 45cm, overall size 46cm x 56cm Framed. Label verso: Doig, Wilson, & Wheatley, Edinburgh. Note: A rare Paris painting from 1922 when Milne lived in the French capital. Seeing Cezanne's work for the first time was a eureka moment for Milne who until then had painted much like his father in a sedate and traditional style. He discovered a completely new freedom and walked the streets and sights of Paris painting what he saw, en plein air and with rapid, bold brush strokes. Above all, he discovered ''colour''. This very distinct Paris period saw Milne producing some of his most spontaneous and desirable work and usually on smaller-scale artist boards. By 1922/3 he had moved to the French village of Lavardin and by 1924 he was in Cassis with Peploe, Cadell and Duncan Grant. Milne is often referred to as ''the fifth Scottish Colourist'' and yet his quality is at least the equal of much of the output of the other four. As well as enjoying the company of the Scottish Colourists and exhibiting alongside them, Milne shared many of their patrons. William Boyd, the Managing Director of Keiller’s marmalade firm, became one of his most important patrons. In Boyd’s home at Claremont, several works by William McTaggart, Peploe, Hunter and Milne were displayed. His collection of French paintings included Monet, Sisley, Van Gogh, Matisse, Bonnard, Vuillard and de Segonzac. Alexander Keiller, head of the marmalade firm, was another important patron. He paid Milne a stipend – so that he could spend the summers in France – in return for paintings. The collector, Matthew Justice, was a close friend of George Leslie Hunter as well as being his agent during the 1920s. Justice owned around a dozen of Milne’s paintings; his sitting-room was hung exclusively with works by Peploe and Milne and his drawing-room contained eleven Peploes, three Marchands, one Hunter and five Milne’s. The Justice collection also included works by Vuillard, de Segonzac, Moreau and Matisse. Justice was friends with William Boyd and James Tattersall, another important patron of Milne. Even though Milne's paintings were widely exhibited in his lifetime at the very best venues to great success, it's probably because he never established a long-term relationship with any one gallery or dealer that his paintings have been undervalued for many years. It took until 1987 before the first Milne painting reached the £20,000 mark at auction when ''Busy Paris Street Scene with Figures (1922)'' was sold by Christie's, Glasgow (lot 664, 28th April 1987 £20,000 hammer). The John Maclauchlan Milne Estate is now represented by Tom Hewlett's Portland Gallery (London) and unsurprisingly, his profile and values have been growing. A major exhibition ''Milne And The Colourist Connection'' was staged at Portland Gallery (London) 21st September -13th October 2017. On 30th August 2017 we sold "A Paris Scene (a 35cm x 26.5cm oil on panel) for £25,000 (hammer) and In The Scottish Pictures Auction of 27th April 2022, lot 213 "Cafe, Paris" (a 25.5cm x 34cm oil on board by Maclauchan Milne sold for £30,000 (hammer). Both examples being from the same period (1920 - 1922) when John Maclauchlan Milne walked the streets of the French capital and cemented his place as one of Scotland's finest painters of the 20th century.

Marc Quinn, British b.1964 - The Virtue of Desire, 2013; Patinated bronze, from an edition 8 plus 4 AP, signed, dated and numbered 'Marc Quinn 2013 ed 2/8', 46.5(H) x 54.5(W) x 34(D) cm including base (ARR) Note: Marc Quinn is one of the most important and celebrated artists of his generation, shooting to fame in the 1990s following the RA's 'Sensation' exhibition alongside his fellow YBAs, Damien Hirst and Gary Hume.Since 1988, Quinn has made works focusing on the form of the Orchid, seeing the flowers as 'perfectly evolved little sculptures in themselves, they're full of colour, interesting shapes and beauty'. Reminiscent of the iconic paintings of Georgia O'Keeffe, Quinn's sculptures encapsulate, in the hybrid form of the orchid, the link between nature, artificiality and temporality. The artist's most celebrated use of the orchid was in his large scale installation 'Garden' at the Fondazione Prada in Milan in 2000. Please refer to department for condition report

MORRIS & COMPANY (MAKER), HERBERT HORNE (1864-1916) FOR THE CENTURY GUILD (ATTRIBUTED DESIGNER) ARTS & CRAFTS RUG, CIRCA 1884 hand-woven wool, with characteristic knotted fringeDimensions:74cm x 125cm; including fringe 92cm x 125cmNote: Note: In 1875, Morris & Co. began large-scale production of floor coverings, rugs and carpets, designed to complement an ever-popular ‘Morris’ aesthetic in Victorian Britain. A triumph in craftsmanship on an impressive scale, these designs were hailed as some of the finest hand-knotted carpets ever produced in Britain at the time. Morris’ designs were largely inspired by his love of Eastern carpets from Persia Turkey and China, of which he amassed a great deal and used to furnish his own homes, including Red House. Featuring an array of stylised plants and flowers, carefully woven into fields of vibrant colours, the carpets were hugely popular but very expensive to the average customer. As a result, the firm began to manufacture a range of smaller and less costly alternatives to an eager market. Flowerpots were often a feature of these designs, with trailing flowers stemming out from the centre against a cream ground, and a dark blue border. These smaller rugs were frequently used as wall hangings and occasionally placed as bedside rugs in guest bedrooms. In 1884, Morris & Co. also manufactured several designs for The Century Guild; a group of artists associated with the Arts & Crafts movement, who sought to preserve the integrity of the artistic trade and its craftsmen. These rugs were sold in the Morris & Co. shop and advertised in the Guild’s magazine Hobby Horse. Though Morris never had a hand in designing these, they look back to his earlier Hammersmith pieces, featuring simple patterns of flowers and flowerpots. This rug is thought to have been designed by Herbert Horne, one of the founding members of the Guild, alongside A. H. Mackmurdo and Selwyn Image. Linda Parry comments that of 'the three designers associated with the Guild it is stylistically closest to the work of Herbert Horne'.

Probably because of the war, Nantiat is most exercised with the borders between Spain and Portugal, especially the passes through which it was expected that Napoleon's army might come when the campaign season started in the spring. It is probable that Faden saw an opportunity to sell this detailed and large-scale map to officers in Wellington's army in Portugal, with the idea that it could be used as a reference for the campaign. In July of 1810 - six months after the publication of the map - the French military commander, Marshal Masséna led an army of 65,000 troops into Portugal, pushing on towards Lisbon, but was held back by the Lines of Torres Vedras a set of earthworks that had been built on the orders of Wellington. The campaign - significant for the emergence of large-scale guerrilla warfare - was eventually won by the British under the command of Lt. Gen. Sir Arthur Wellesley, later the 1st Duke of Wellington. It could be argued that the French defeat was sealed when Napoleon set out with a massive army on what proved to be the disastrous French invasion of Russia. This seriously depleted the French forces with the result that a combined allied army under Wellesley pushed into Spain, defeating the French at Salamanca and taking Madrid. In the following year, Wellington scored a decisive victory over King Joseph Bonaparte's army in the Battle of Vitoria. Pursued by the armies of Britain, Spain and Portugal, Marshal Jean-de-Dieu Soult, no longer able to get sufficient support from a depleted France, led the exhausted and demoralized French forces in a fighting withdrawal across the Pyrenees during the winter of 1813/1814. France, Napoleon and its European dominance would finally fall the following year at the battle of Waterloo.
