Important and Comprehensive Collection of Great War Papers, Orders, Maps, Photographs and Ephemera to a Highly Decorated Officer Major J.D.Crosthwaite (hon. Lieut-Colonel). After education at Uppingham School and its OTC, he became a Company Commander in the Norfolk Regiment in May 1915, having come across to France in March, after various Brigade attachments he commanded the 8th Norfolk’s and on its disbandment in 1918 he became O.C. 7th Royal West Kent regiment. On the opening day of the German March offensive in 1918 he was severely wounded and captured. A detailed account of this action in which Crosthwaite displayed great gallantry and in which his Company inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy is contained in Jerry Murland's recent book, "Retreat and Rearguard-Somme 1918 The Fifth Army Retreat". During his service on the Western Front Crosthwaite took part in many key battles, including Bois Grenier (1915), The Somme, including Gommecourt, the Battle of Arras, Ypres, including Poelcappel and of course the German March Offensive. He won the DSO & MC & Bar, Legion of Honour and received two mentions in despatches. (though these are not included here). The collection includes comprehensive and important Operation orders for September/October 1916 and for the Polcappelle Operations (53rd Brigade) together with associated Trench maps with objectives. There is also an outstanding range of original Trench Maps, (c.17) many 1,10,000 scale with unit details added and clearly used operationally by Crosthwaite (including 3rd Ypres, Broembeek, Vis-En-Artois, Arras, Somme etc. etc.). Also a number of aerial photographs, some oblique, and showing objectives and the devastation of the battlefields etc. Of particular interest are two exceptional rolled panoramas with an image taken from the front line trench, one of Arras and the other of Gommecourt, just prior to the Somme July Offensive (these are around 8 feet long!). Also two Official British SS Series reports, one on the Defence of Gommecourt on 1st July 1916. An interesting Album named to J.D.C.is included containing a number of family images, pre and early WWI military and a motor cycle trip to Brighton! Crosthwaite appears in a number of the photographs. There are a small number of photographs taken in the trenches, namely Costhwaite's dugout and of him standing on a duckboard in trench coat and wellington's and dated January 1918, also somewhat surprisingly there are a number of images of him in the German POW Camp in Karlsruhe, both with other Officers and also a group of recently captured Officers, many still with Steel helmets (one has been marked as Mayhew and Crosthwaite has sent the photo home to Banstead in Surrey in May 1918 to ask his mother to contact the Officers' "people" presumably to show this Officer is safe. Among many other items included are three German shoulder boards and a 1917 dated folding colour chart of Australian patches, In all a remarkable, comprehensive and important collection, viewing thoroughly recommended.

Mint See Plate 2 Note: A project designed by Porsche chief engineer around a Bristol Orpheus turbine engine mounted in a fairing between twin outboard hulls carrying self-suspending wheels. The intention was to utilise the jet exhaust to drive a paddle turning the rear wheels to achieve a 60/40 split between thrust and wheel power.
