§ Sir Terry Frost, RA (British, 1915-2003) Blue shapes, collage signed and dated lower right "Frost '77" gouache and collage on paper 35½ x 54½cm (14 x 21in) Provenance: Private collection, Cambridgeshire. The present painting belongs to the period of Terry Frost's works which utilised colour cut-outs in the 1970s. It holds strong similarities to 'Through Blacks', made in 1969, which is in the Tate collection, and 'Through Blues', made in 1979. These works were constructed with swatches of canvas, painted with different hues of a single colour, glued to a larger canvas. The composition created in these works holds strong similarities to the present work. However, differences are apparent in the use of multiple colours rather than a single colour, the smaller scale of work, and the use of collage instead of canvas. In these methods, we can see links to Frost's other 1970s cut-out works such as 'Pisa', created in 1973. Condition is fine.
