"Sicily, Syracuse AR Dekadrachm. Time of Dionysios I, circa 405-370 BC. Unsigned dies in the style of Euainetos. Charioteer driving galloping quadriga to left, holding kentron in right hand, reins in left; above, Nike flies to right, a wreath in her outstretched arms to crown the charioteer; in the exergue, a panoply of arms is set on two steps: a cuirass, two greaves, and a Phrygian helmet / Head of the nymph Arethusa to left, wearing a reed wreath, triple-pendant earring, and a pearl necklace; [ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙΩΝ] behind, pellet below chin, star of four points behind neck, and four dolphins around. Gallatin XXII-JVIIA; Dewing 923. 40.90g, 34mm, 11h.Good Very Fine. Some minor roughness on surfaces. An attractive specimen struck in high relief from dies in the style of the master engraver Euainetos. The dekadrachms of Syracuse have been called 'the admiration of the ancient and modern world', and 'perhaps the most famous of all ancient coins'; rightly so, for by virtue of not only their impressive size and weight, but more importantly the incredibly detailed artistry of exquisite style which they bear, they represent the zenith of cultural and numismatic technological achievement at ancient Syracuse, and are among the most beautiful coins ever struck for circulation.Produced at the apex of Syracuse's power and glory, the dekadrachm issue began circa 405 BC, following the election of Dionysios as supreme military commander of Syracuse for his achievements in the war against Carthage, and his subsequent seizure of total power. Syracuse had only recently defeated an Athenian invasion of Sicily that resulted in the utter destruction of Athens' expeditionary force and ultimately contributed significantly to their defeat at the hands of Sparta in the Peloponnesian War. Then under Dionysios in 405, despite the ruin of great cities such as Akragas and Gela, Syracuse repulsed a Carthaginian invasion that might have resulted in a complete conquest of the island. Such glory was short-lived however, as the rule of Dionysios' son and successor was to bring only civil strife that would weaken the power of Syracuse. Never again would the city issue coinage on such a grand scale, and with the cessation of tetradrachm production in c. 400 BC, the dekadrachms represent the last great flourishing of classical numismatic art at Syracuse before two centuries of steady decline and eventual conquest at the hands of the Romans. "
Alexander before the King of Macedonia?: A Slender Early 18th Century Ivory Fan, the sticks piqué with steel in quite regular designs, the scale delicate. The vellum leaf, mounted à l'anglaise, is painted with a king, possibly Phillip of Macedonia, seated on a sumptuously draped throne, greeting his son Alexander (later Alexander II of Macedonia) on his mount Bucephalus, soldiers in attendance, a small dog in the foreground. The verso, with a cream ground, is painted with three sprays of roses and parrot tulips. Guard length 25.5cmMonture quite dirty. Leaf rubbed but colours strong.
The Pedlar: An 18th Century Ivory Fan, possibly Italian, with carved and inlaid guards and carved and pierced gorge, the inlay of mother-of-pearl, with animals and birds, the very colourful gorge a delight of miniature paintings of animals, to include foxes and squirrels and perhaps a pig, small scale houses, churches: three vignettes, two featuring birds, the larger central vignette with a vase and colourful flowers and foliage. The double paper leaf depicts a rural village and the arrival of pedlars, who carry pots and pans and are accompanied by a mule, perhaps offering a relining service for pans. A maidservant carrying scales is possibly buying fruit. The verso has a simple outdoor scene with one lady and a building, both of which are blackened. Guard length 26.5cmBlackening to two faces, the leaf very rubbed. One stick broken at the shoulder. Bright colours.
Hera: A 19th Century ''Vernis Martin'' Brisé Fan, with twenty-six inner sticks and two guards, the sticks painted with Hera in her chariot drawn through the skies by two peacocks, a man, perhaps Zeus, and a woman and winged cherubs around. The guards, having tortoiseshell thumb guards, are painted in sections of different and small scale designs, the gorge in two bands each containing chinoiserie figures. The ribbon is painted with small designs. The verso is a scene of countryside being crossed by a viaduct. Guard length 20.5cmRubbing to the gorge, and guards with one paint chip to the shoulder of the lower guard, two to the upper guard. Note warping to some inner sticks.
A Mid-19th Century Bone Fan, with wide sticks and guards, all carved and pierced but unadorned. The gorge carving, mainly of flowers, is on a large scale, complementing the size of the central carving of three ladies in fine detailed 18th century costume, with large hats and elbow length sleeves from which lace engageantes protrude. This carving is backed with burgau. The double paper leaf recto/verso shows a similar scene of a social gathering in the countryside, but where the participants on the recto appear to be country folk with a goat and sheep around them, the verso presents perhaps a slightly higher social level with more refined costume. Guard length 27cmThe guards in particular would benefit from cleaning. Some slight marking to the verso and slight scuffing to the leaf, which is also rubbed on the folds.
An 18th Century Ivory Fan, the monture Chinese Export, the guards carved in panels of small scale, with figures and buildings and trees. The gorge is pierced with several vignettes and panels, the central vignette being oval. All pierced areas feature quite regular lattice work of differing designs. The leaf is a later, mid-19th century addition, printed with a garden scene with fountains and a frontage onto possibly the Grand Canal in Venice, the boats appearing to be gondolas. Perhaps a costume ball, as those attending are dressed as Cavaliers and their ladies. The verso shows a simple outdoor scene, a lady outside a simple house, a decorative floral border to the top and sides of the leaf. Guard length 26.5cmThere are a few splits to the top of the leaf folds. Later leaf.
The Flower Meadow: A 19th Century Ivory Fan, painted in autumnal colours, the gorge with a central scene of three chinoiserie figures, the remainder painted with small scale patterns of different designs. Mother-of-pearl thumb guard. The paper leaf, mounted à l'anglaise, depicts a maiden in a flower meadow, surrounded by playful cherubs, the whole in pastel colours. The verso is virtually plain save for simple swags of green foliage and small musical instruments. Guard length 24cmThe leaf is very rubbed. The monture has rubbed paint in several areas, in particular the rear guard.
A 19th Century Ivory Brisé Fan, varnished in the ''Vernis Martin'' fashion, in autumnal colours. The recto, a gentle riverside fishing expedition, being enjoyed by two girls and a young man, a smaller scale but similar painting in the gorge. The verso shows a similar riverside scene, without figures. Guard length 18.5cm. Together with a cream card fan box, labelled for E Kees, 9 Bvd des Capuchines, ParisRibbon defective.
An Unusual Mid-19th Century Chinese Ivory Mandarin Fan, Qing Dyansty, the sticks being relatively plain, being carved only on the upper section of each guard, and in a central oval on the gorge. The carving on the guards, deeper than that in the central oval, depicts three figures under the shade of a tree. The gorge oval is carved with trees, figures and buildings. The leaf depicts various figures of different social levels, two young men push an older figure in a wheeled carriage, another man walking ahead carrying possessions. Buildings are painted blue and many of the applied silk robes are of a sombre deep plum. Children, to the left, appear to be either playing a game or musical instruments. All figures have applied painted ivory faces. The verso, in bright cerise, shows an unusual grouping, with two figures inside a ceremonial dragon, four musicians with instruments, and four other figures one carrying a fan, another a tall pole supporting a fish, another with a similar pole bearing an oversized flower. The surrounding border is elaborate, and small scale, with vignettes of blooms, fruit and colourful birds. Shaped gold metal loop with silk tassel. Together with a fitted lacquer fan box with domed lid and unusual painting, the lining of blue silk, painted inside the lid with bats, fish, and flowersMonture sound but requires cleaning. The leaf is grubby, noticeable on the cream side, slight rubbing to the leaf folds. Some very small chips to the lacquer at the front of the box. The clasp holds.
