Latin text on verso.Fine old color example of Blaeu's map of Bermuda. Blaeu based his work on John Speed's remarkably accurate map of 1626-1627. It shows the island divided into tribes and lots, and the The table at the bottom includes a list of the proprietors, divided by Tribe and the number of shares purchased by each Proprietor, along with a number key, identifying the land owned by each of the shareholders. A splendid cartouche shows Neptune astride the Royal Arms holding a ship and a trident. Further adorned with scale cartouches, coats of arms and compass rose with a fleur-de-lys.
Anglo-French School, circa 1800 A View of a coastal town in the Caribbean, most probably Fort-de-France and Saint Pierre on the Island of Martinique, with Mont Pelée smoking oil on canvas 92 x 125cm (36 x 49in) Provenance: From a Kent country house Mont Pelée is known to have partially erupted in January 1792 when little damage was done to the local infrastructure - unlike its later full-scale eruption in 1902 when it virtually destroyed the town. The current church of Saint Pierre , which was partially destroyed in 1902, would seem to have been reconstructed on the towers seen in the centre of the present painting. Oil on canvas which has been lined. There is a tear in the upper right quadrant which has been secured from the reverse with a canvas patch, the paint along the tear have slightly raised edges. The rest of the paint layer is in a good condition, there are some areas of wear and abrasion in the thinner paint passages. There are scattered retouchings. The varnish is clear and even. There is some wear to the gilding on the frame.
Daniel Clowes (British, 1774-1829) Scenes with a Harrier pack - Unboxing, The Off, The Chase, The Kill; after Samuel Howitt's (1756/57-1822) engraved compositions of Hare Hunting scenes, published 1798-99 all signed "D Clowes pinxit / Howitt del"; The Kill also dated "1822" oil on canvas (a set of four) 59 x 85cm (23 x 33in) Provenance: From a Buckinghamshire country house All four paintings are executed on canvas supports which have been lined. The paint layers have localised areas of flaking and loss, the painting with a hare is actively flaking on a small scale. All of the paintings have a yellowed, dull varnish with various scuffs and scratches. The frames have suffered from wear and abrasion.
