A cast iron candlestick, cast after a design by Diego Giacometti, signed to base 33½cm (13in) Diego Giacometti (1902-1985) was a Swiss sculptor and designer, younger brother of the sculptor Alberto Giacometti with whom he worked closely. They worked in adjacent studios and were rarely separated. Michael Brenson wrote, "What they shared was a feeling for form and scale, a deep respect for craft, a boundless passion for work….." (Michael Brenson, New York Times, "Art: The Furniture of Diego Giacometti," June 21, 1985). Alberto Giacometti designed a pair of andirons, of very similar design, in 1936 for Nelson Rockefeller's drawing room in Park Avenue New York. (See Christie's NY 26 September 2007, Lot 15).
