Partridge (Seth). The Description and Use of an Instrument, Called the Double Scale of Proportion. Wing 630A. Scarce, no copies recorded at auction. “The first complete duplex slide rule was made in 1657 by Seth Partridge. The rule consisted of two strips of wood held together by bridging cleats with a third strip sliding freely between them. (detached) and addn. title (both foxed), double-page eng. notice ‘To the Subscribers’, patterned textured free endpapers, vellum pastedowns, front pastedown with monogram ‘CC’ painted in blue (possibly that of Cedric Chivers), a.e.g., early 19th c. blue morocco, spine lightly faded, gilt rule decorated raised bands, gilt lettered direct in second and fourth compartments, remainder with dotted line lattice, date lettered at foot, covers with double fillet and dotted line border filled with dotted fish scale design, each compartment containing a large dot tool, double fillets on edges, gilt dec. turn-ins, 12mo in 6s. Hinton (John). [The Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure., 1765 - 73], thirty-four (of 39) double page uncoloured engraved strip road maps, old folds, slight creasing, modern half calf with contrasting morocco label to spine, slim upright 4to. Chubb CCXXVI, Beresiner p.114. The maps are clearly based on John Ogilby’s ‘Britannia’ of 1675 but are of a much larger scale than most other 18th century road and route maps. Hinton’s road maps have no reference to an engraver or author. Perhaps Hinton considered the authorship unnecessary as he was already known as the publisher of the two dominant English cartographers of the 18th century, Thomas Kitchin and Emaunuel Bowen as well as being the publisher of ‘The Universal Magazine’. Bristol Channel. Doncker (Hendrick), Cust van Engelandt van Lezard tot Engelands eynde de Sorlinges ende Canaal van Bristou als mede hoe zy van Yrland gelegen, pub. Amsterdam, c.1675, uncoloured engraved sea chart, inset map of the Scilly Isles, strapwork cartouche and mileage scale, compass rose and numerous rhumb lines, skillfully repaired closed tears, slight loss to upper margin and corners, professionally repaired, 435 x 530mm (1).
Carmarthenshire. Speed (John), Caermarden Both Shyre and Towne described, pub. Thomas Bassett & Richard Chiswell, c.1676, engraved map with sparse outline colouring, inset town plan of Carmarthan, strapwork cartouche, compass rose and mileage scale, slight fraying to margins but not affecting image, slight offsetting of watercolour, 390 x 510mm, English text on verso, mounted (1).
France. Berry (William), The Kingdom of France Distinguished according to the extent of all its Provinces and Conquests in Spain, Italy, Germany,, Flanders, Artoise, Haynoult, Namur and Luxembourg. Provinces of the Low Countries, c.1680, engraved map with contemp. outline colouring, elaborate b & w cartouche and mileage scale, slight off setting and spotting, central fold repaired on verso, some marginal closed tears, 570 x 890mm, together with another approx. seventy regional and country maps of France, mostly 18th & 19th century, including examples by Bonne, Mallet, S.D.U.K., Johnston, Gall & Inglis, Mercator/Hondius, Dezauche, Jansson, Faden, Cary, Wyld and Arrowsmith, occ. duplicates, various sizes and condition (approx.70).
Huntingdonshire. Blaeu (Johannes), Huntingdonensis Comitatus, Huntington Shire, c.1650, hand coloured engraved map, elaborate cartouche and mileage scale, 400 x 505mm, Latin text on verso, together with Ogilby (John),The Road from Huntingdon to Ipswich., c.1675, hand coloured engraved strip road map, elaborate cartouche, occ. marginal closed tears, 330 x 465mm, with Morden (Robert),Huntingtonshire, [1695 or later], hand coloured engraved map, 370 x 425mm (3).
Italy. A mixed collection of twenty-seven maps and topographical engravings, mostly 18th & 19th century, including twenty-one engravings and lithographs, with examples by Balzour, ‘Vue D’Optique’, Trojani, Parboni, Moore and Allen and six large scale maps, by Dyonnet, Johnston, Andiveau-Goujon, Pozzi and Manzoni, various sizes and condition (27).
Jamaica. Browne (Patrick), A New Map of Jamaica, in which Several Towns, Forts and Settlements are laid down., the Greatest part Drawn or Corrected from actual Surveys made by Mr. Sheffield and others. With Corrections & Improvements up to Jany. 1797, engraved map with contemp. hand colouring, sectionalised and laid on linen, inset town plan of Port Royal, decorative cartouche and mileage scale, some overall toning, small ink stain to town plan, 700 x 1300mm, framed and glazed (1).
Kent. Jansson (Jan), Cantium Vernacule Kent, c.1660, hand coloured engraved map, ornate cartouche and mileage scale, compass roses and numerous rhumb lines, 385 x 505mm, Dutch text on verso, together with Blaeu (Johannes),Cantium Vernacule Kent, c.1690, engraved map with contemp. hand colouring, ornate cartouche and mileage scale, some restoration on verso, 385 x 530mm, blank on verso (2).
Oxfordshire. Blaeu (Johannes), Oxonium Comitatus vulgo Oxford Shire, c.1845, engraved map with contemp. hand colouring and some later enhancement, decorative cartouche and mileage scale, the vertical margins decorated with sixteen heraldic shields of Oxford University colleges, engraved view of the Rollright stones with contemp. hand colouring on verso, 380 x 500mm, mounted framed and double glazed, French text on verso (1).
Westmorland. Speed (John), The Countie Westmorland and Kendale the Cheif Towne Described with the Armes of such Nobles as have bene Earles of either of them, pub. George Humble, c.1627, hand coloured engraved map, inset town plan of Kendal, elaborate strapwork cartouche, compass rose and mileage scale, 385 x 505mm, English text on verso, mounted, framed and double glazed (1).

Saxton (Christopher & Lea Philip), Worcestershire Described by C.Saxton, Corrected and Amended with many Additions as Roads &c. by P.Lea, c.1690, hand coloured engraved map,inset town plan of Worcester, strapwork cartouche and mileage scale, 380 x 490mm, mounted, framed and glazed (1).
Piranesi (Giovanni Battista). Vedute di Roma, c.1760’s, a collection of ten small-scale etched views of ancient buildings in Rome, plate size approx. 13 x 19cm, sheet size 17 x 26.5cm, some light spotting, light vertical crease to each where previously folded. The views are: Fontana d’Acqua Felice, S. Stefano Rotondo, Palazzo degl’ Ambasciatori di Venezia, Palazzo Pontifico etc., Villa Lodovisi, Chiesa di S. Paolo fuori delle Mura, Belvedere in Vaticano, Chiesa ed Ospedale di Santo Spirito, Chiesa di S. Carlino alle Quattro Fontane, & Arco degli Argentieri (by Bellicard). (1).

An exhibition standard 1/4 inch scale model of a Bentley BR2 nine cylinder rotary aero engine, built by Mr Ron Webb of Brisbane, Australia, to the L.K. Blackmore drawings, with stainless steel finned cylinders, pushrod operated valves, twin distributors, and twin spark plugs per cylinder with leads, the engine mounted on a tubular display frame with fitted block propellor, stainless steel fuel tank with associated pipework and shut off lever, together with fuel tank and oil reservoir, the engine 12 inches in diameter (30.5cm), 15 inches (38cm) deep, and bearing maker’s plate to plinth which conceals a motorised drive for display purposes. The original full size engines were designed by W.O. Bentley in 1916-17 at the request of the Admirality to replace the Clerget and give an engine of greater power and reliability. Bentley used aluminium pistons in cast iron liners, as he did for his motor car engines, whereas the Clerget had employed cast iron pistons in very thin-walled steel cylinders. The BR2 was fitted to the famous Sopwith Snipe aircraft.
An exhibition standard 7 1/4 inch gauge model of London Midland and Scottish Railway Coronation Class 7P 4-6-2 tender locomotive ‘Duchess of Buccleuch’, 6230, built by John Adams of Poole, the brazed copper super-heated boiler with all fittings including quadruple safety valves, swivelling regulator, blower, whistle, brake, injector and blowdown valves, the fine cab with fittings including reverse gear with indicator and locking lever, sliding firedoors, draincock and ejector levers, pressure and twin water gauges, and wooden-planked cab floor with scale checker plate, the chassis with four fitted cylinders with Walschaert’s valve gear, brass lubrication boxes, twin ratchet oilers, draincocks, sanding gear, steam brakes, quality rivetwork, scale wash out plugs and doors, lamp irons, steps, hand rails and vacuum hoses, also a Crewe Works plate No.9752-1938, and smoke deflectors, the tender with fitted hand feed pump, hand brake, water pick-up controls and scoop, water valves, working steam-driven mechanical shoveller with cylinder guides, exhaust condenser, lifting eyes, lamp brackets, steps, hand-rails and vacuum hoses, finished in lined maroon livery with polished bright-work, 290cm long, 53.5cm wide. An approximately 1 inch scale scratch-built static model of a showman’s engine, constructed in metal with open crank and eccentric valve gear, eccentric driven feed pump, chain and worm steering, generator, spoked wheels with fitted rubber road tyres, brass hub caps, belly tanks, driver’s seat, chimney with spark arrester, and firing shovel, finished in red and black paintwork with brass olivers supporting canopy, 61cm long, 20cm wide, 26cm high.
An approximately 2 inch scale model of a live-steam agricultural traction engine, the boiler fitted with pressure gauge, sight-glass and safety valve, crank with spoked flywheel, brass oiler cups and eccentric driven water pump, single cylinder with Stephenson’s link reverse and speed govenor, ratchet oiler, worm and chain steering, drum winch, two road speeds, brake to rear wheel, regulator, spoked wheels with strakes fitted to rear, and brass hub caps to all wheels, finished in green, red and black paintwork, 90cm long, 33cm wide. Boiler History: None available.
A well executed model of the Windermere steam launch ‘Dolly’, built by Dr John B. Sayer of Worthing, to a scale of 18mm to 1 foot, designed for radio-controlled use, the steam plant with horizontal, twin probe, gas-fired boiler, the fittings including steam pressure gauge, sight-glass, two safety valves, steam control valve, eccentric driven feed pump, water feed pump in the boiler room and other usual fittings, the boiler driving a live-steam vertical, twin simple, marine engine, similar to but slightly smaller than a Stuart D10, coupled to a propeller shaft with a hand made three-blade propeller, finished in great detail with plank-work, covered boiler room, glazed area to view engine, red ensign and Royal Naval Sailing Association flag, and passengers. Boiler History: Past boiler certificate No.24493, Worthing & District SME. Working pressure 50 psi. Hydraulic test pressure 100 psi. Expired 8th March 1997.
A 1/8th scale scratch-built live steam model of the saloon launch ‘Donola’, the gas fired ‘Yarrow type’ copper boiler with fittings including pressure gauge, sight glass and steam control valve, powering a Stuart Turner D10 vertical marine engine with worm and gear driven water pump and ratchet oiler, hand feed pump, and linkage via universal joint to drive shaft with a brass four blade propellor and brass rudder, the mahogany constructed body with fore and aft passenger accommodation, brass handrails and copper lamps, 228cm long, 33cm wide; complete with transportation box. Please note: This was built by Mr Miller-Mead of Welwyn Garden CityBoiler History: Southern Federation of Model Engineering Societies steam test certificate No.ST115380, working pressure 90 p.s.i. Valid until 20th February 2013. ‘Donola’ was built in 1893 by the Kingdom Yacht, Launch & Engineering Co. Ltd of Teddington for Alfred Palmer, of the Reading biscuit manufacturers Huntley & Palmer’s. Originally known as ‘Lodona’ she was renamed circa 1912, having passed into the ownership of James Bigwood. Between 1920 and 1969 she served the Thames Conservancy as an inspection launch on the upper reaches of the river, before being presented to The National Maritime Museum. This model is one of only two known to exist of the launch. It has been exhibited at the Model Engineering Exhibition at Alexandra Palace, London on three separate occasions, most recently in January 2012.
A well-constructed scratch-built flying scale model of Bristol monoplane ‘G.EAVP’, a fighter converted for civil racing use, the fine-fabric covered wood airframe finished in burnt orange and black with white registration details and number, the 22 inch (56cm) diameter wood propeller fitted to the dummy A.B.C. ‘Dragonfly’ engine, on a strut-braced main undercarriage with rubber tyred wheels and sprung tailskid, 94 inch (239cm) wingspan.

A Yixing teapot and two others 18th century famille rose, the cover with Buddhist lion finial, its petal edged rim conforming with the lobed body below, marks partially obscured, the iron red scale ground tea pot with later copper handle and the mandarin palette tea pot featuring a lady falconer (6) (D).
