Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) was a Swedish artist and one of the pioneers of abstract art. Born in Stockholm, Sweden, af Klint began her artistic career studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, where she trained as a traditional landscape and portrait painter. However, af Klint's artistic vision began to evolve in the late 19th century when she became involved in spiritualism and theosophy, which had a profound influence on her work. She began experimenting with automatic drawing and other forms of mediumistic communication, believing that she was channeling messages from the spiritual realm.Af Klint's abstract paintings, which she created in the early 20th century, predated those of many of her more well-known contemporaries such as Wassily Kandinsky and Kazimir Malevich. Her works are characterized by their bold geometric shapes, vibrant colors, and esoteric symbols, which she believed represented spiritual truths and cosmic forces. One of af Klint's most ambitious projects was her series of paintings known as "The Paintings for the Temple," which she worked on in secret for over a decade. These large-scale works were intended to be displayed in a temple-like setting and were created as part of af Klint's exploration of the relationship between art, spirituality, and the divine.Despite her groundbreaking contributions to the development of abstract art, af Klint's work remained largely unknown during her lifetime, as she kept most of her abstract paintings hidden from public view. It was only after her death that her work began to receive the recognition it deserved, and she is now celebrated as one of the most important and innovative artists of the early 20th century. Her work continues to inspire and captivate audiences around the world with its visionary beauty and profound spiritual insight.Measures 38 x 51.1.

‡ DAVID WOODFORD (b.1938) large, fine exhibition quality oil on canvas - Llyn Llydaw, Eryri (Snowdonia) with clouds and shaft of sunlight inscribed verso, 82 x 118cmsProvenance: private collection West Midlands, smaller version of this scene illustrated as Plate 32, 'The Art of David Woodford - Mountains and Memories' by Tom Dutton (Gwasg Carreg Gwalch) 2016Auctioneer's Note (Dr Harry Heuser): rooted in the experience of nature and its close observation, David Woodford’s paintings are at once monumental and of the moment. Ranging from pochades (or pocket-size plein-air sketches) of arresting immediacy to sublime large-scale canvases, such as this example, on which the artist keeps working in his studio for as long as ten years, these landscapes are as much concerned with the eternal as they are with the evanescent.Woodford captures the distinctive features of the rugged Welsh countryside, with special focus on the grandeur of Eryri (Snowdonia), where the Shropshire-born artist has been living for over half a century. More than achieving topographical transcripts of the land, however, his paintings captivate us with their intentness on the atmosphere and the mercurial temperament of the elements – the ‘fugitive … moods’ of nature, as Woodford puts it – that make startlingly new and revelatory what we might assume to be unchanging.A Royal Cambrian Academician who trained at West Sussex College of Art and, as a mature student returning to college after a five-year period of teaching, at the Royal Academy Schools in London, Woodford has been committed to a sustained engagement with nature since the late 1960s. At a time when drawing and painting were being challenged by conceptualism, when academic and curatorial attention was diverted from traditional methods and materials to new media, Woodford set out rigorously to pursue the essentials that many practitioners and educators temporarily and, in some cases, permanently abandoned. As Woodford acknowledges, his practice has benefitted greatly from the instruction and insights he received in his schooling from ‘painters who taught, not teachers who painted.’Woodford’s works have been exhibited widely in England and Wales; a major retrospective featuring over 200 paintings and drawings was staged in 2023 at Oriel Môn. The subject of books including The Art of David Woodford (2016), his works are in the collections of The Arts Council, The National Library of Wales, and the National Museum of Wales.Woodford’s landscapes are only gaining in relevance. They are increasingly resonant in an age in which human interventions into nature threaten what we thought would not only take care of itself but continue to sustain us. Anticipating contemporary debates, Woodford has long presented us with a world without people, a world that, he says, ‘will survive without them.’ Contemplative, studious and unwavering, his art, both singly and collectively, brings home how rewarding a lifelong creative process of discovery can be.Dr Harry Heuser, curator, art writer and researcher, co-author of Welsh artist biographiesComments: framed, ready to hangDelivery: complimentary delivery can be arranged for all purchases over £4000 in this Welsh Sale auction (England and Wales only) please contact brj@rjauctions.co.uk for further detailsLATER NOTE: location of scene corrected since the printing of the hardcopy catalogue

" (Smith, History of Metallography, pp. 132f.) - Selten. - Ganz vereinzelt blasse kleine Stockflecken, sehr wenige Seiten leicht gebräunt bzw. unten mit sehr blassem Wasserrand, insgesamt sehr gut. Geology. - Metallurgy. - With 13 folded plates. Contemporary leather with rich spine guilding and red spine label. First Edition. "In 1775 Pierre Grignon published the present book on various aspects of iron mineralogy and metallurgy which is of considerable importance to the history of metallurgy and crystallography. Grignon was occupied in the commercial operation of a blast furnace and forge plant and his science stemmed from observations on a much larger scale than those of his laboratory contemporaries. He had the opportunity to see large crystals in shrinkage heads of large castings. The first memoir of structural interest 'Mémoire sur les métamorphoses du fer' had been read before the French Academy in 1761, but was not published until 1775. Here, he provides a model of crystal structure which is qualitatively the same as that used by Romé de l'Isle in 1772, by Tobern Bergman in 1773, and particularly by the great Haüy in 1784, and it is not improbable that Grignon's ideas, public but unpublished, provided the stimulus for the mathematical approach of these more famous crystallographers. Although the possibility of solid solutions as a mixed aggregate is implicit in the ideas of many of the corpuscular philosophers, it is Grignon who first describes a crystallographic model of a mixed crystal." (Smith, History of Metallography, pp. 132-136.) - Rare. - Very isolated faint small foxing, very few pages slightly browned or rather with very faint watermark at bottom, all in all very good.

A monumental bronze bowl signed ‘Abu Bakr Muhamad Ibn Hasan Al-Herati’,Herat, Iran, 13th century,of hemispherical form on a short foot, with wide flaring rim, the rim with six inscription cartouches, four comprising thuluth inscriptions and rabbits on a vegetal ground and two with naskh inscriptions, alternating with roundels, area of loss to rim, 71.3cm. diam. Published: Christie’s Arts of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, Including works from the Simon Digby Collection, Thursday 7 April 2011, lot 46 (£70,000-100,000 estimate). Provenance: Acquired by the vendor from a UK Private Collection, where it had reputedly been acquired in the 1960’s.Inscriptions:In thuluth to the rim: al'izz wa'l-iqbal wa'l-dawla wa'l salama wa'l-shafa'a wa'l-... wa'l-shukr wa'l-shakira wa'l-'afiya wa'l-tama wa'l-rahma wa'l-rahima, "Glory and fortune and wealth and well-being and happiness and intercession and ... and gratitude and gratefulness and health and entirety and mercy and compassion."In naskh to the rim: Owner's inscription haji hasan (?) khalvati, "Haji Hasan (?) Khalvati"Maker's inscription 'amal abi bakr muhammad ibn hasan (?) al-herati, "made by 'Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Hasan al-Herati" Footnotes: This large bowl is a very rare example of large scale Khorassan metalwork, the quality of which is confirmed by the engraved inscriptions; the maker's signature to the rim, the owner's inscription, and the benedictory inscriptions in thuluth wishing good health and compassion on the owner. The bowl stands on a wide, circular foot and is larger in diameter than any of the published Khorassan bronze cauldrons, the largest comparable vessels datable to this period. The presence of a maker's signature is particularly remarkable and is paralleled in the aforementioned caudrons indicating the casting large bronze vessels was something of a technical feat. A cauldron in the State Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg has a maker's signature of Abu Bakr Mahmud Saffra and a further example in the Victoria and Albert Museum is signed Abu Bakr (see A.S. Melikian Chirvani, Islamic Metalwork from the Iranian World, London, 1982, pl. 10, p. 48). The signature on our bowl is also interesting as it places the vessel's manufacture in Herat, which was formerly eastern Khorassan. Condition Report: Intact with dented areas on rim, natural patination to the surface.
