A pair of mahogany wassail cups and covers, 18th century, with turned decoration and urn shaped finials, 22cm high (4) Wassail is a drink of mulled cider. The word Wassail is derived from the old Norse `Ves heill` which entered the English language as a salutation `wes hal` or good health. Although it was also a riotous drunken festival, in areas such as Devon, it was a ritual taken very seriously, the apple being an important part of the local economy.
