A DORSET BRASS LANTERN CLOCK inscribed "Nicholas Hancock, Shaston, Dorset", the dial with a projecting chapter ring, a single hand and a centre engraved with flowers and foliage surmounted by a panel pierced and engraved with entwined dolphins amidst foliage, flanked by urn-shaped finials supporting the belt, on ball feet with peg toes, 14.5" high, together with a later wall bracket, weights, and a brass-cased pendulum. Nicholas Hancock is recorded as working in Shaftesbury (Shaston) Dorset during the latter part of the 17th century.

A pair of Victorian cast iron urn finials attributed to the Handyside Foundry, circa 1875, of amphora form, the flared and foliate cast necks above lobed bodies relief cast with fruiting vine, with twin stylied scroll handles, the waisted socles on square section bases, later drilled for electricity, 78cm high overall, 61cm excluding later elements PROVENANCE: Christie's Ashurst, 27 September 2004, lot 243 CATALOGUE NOTE: A vase basically identical to the present design appears in the Handyside Foundry’s 1874 catalogue, page 60. The design is illustrated in John PS Davis, Antique Garden Ornament, Antique Collectors’ Club, 1991, p. 249. The large and prolific Derby-based Britannia Iron Works, owned by Scotsman Andrew Handyside, produced a wide range of objects, from reproduction antique vases to railway bridges. They are probably best known for the vast cast iron National Agricultural Hall in London, now known as Olympia.
