MAPLE & CO; a lady's cylinder topped writing desk, the three-quarter brass gallery above urn and scroll inlaid cylinder activated by the lower pull-out drawer and revealing an interior of compartments and three drawers with inlaid hinged surface enclosing a tooled brown leather interior and raised on square section tapering legs united by an undertier and raised on spade feet, stamped to drawer, height 91cm, width 75cm, depth 50cm.Provenance: From a private Worcestershire collection.Additional InformationThe action is slightly stiff with the cylinder and the drawer and there is a vertical scratch to the cylinder, where presumably something is catching through the action. The brass gallery is lifting slightly in parts, but this is an easy fix. Light general surface scratches, a 5cm section of ebony stringing missing to the undertier. Some slight lifting of the inlaid stringing in parts, with a further 3cm section missing to the upper part of a leg, with a couple of possible old repairs to the stringing. One small bruise to the side, but overall of good colour. This is our advice only - the pattern is still visible beneath the scratch, it appears to mostly be a veneer loss. We cannot say if this will be invisible when attended to by a professional restorer, the piece will be monitered during auction viewing.

Lot 1146

A good harlequin set of ten Edwardian Sheraton revival painted satinwood cane seated dining chairs, with pierced floral and urn decorated shield backs, canework seats, shaped front rails and raised on fluted and carved tapering front legs (6+4)Provenance: From a private Worcestershire collection.Additional InformationA few flecks of veneer missing, four of the chairs have some sun bleaching from being in use and the sun coming through an open window. The canework is sound on all bar two of the chairs, so two of the canework chairs would need some attention. Some slight crazing to the painted decoration in parts. The chairs are very closely matched, but they are actually two sets of four, with slightly different detail to the top rails. Four have turned back legs, four have square sectioned back legs. The condition of the carvers will be reflected in the condition report given. One of the carvers has some additional splits above the joint between the top rail and the splat back, another old split to the lower section of one of the splats along with some crazine, rubbing to decoration as well as the general wear referred to above.
