An Etruscan red impasto ware lidded cinerary urn Archaic Period, circa 650-625 B.C.28.7cm high, 40cm wide, 18.5cm deepFootnotes:Provenance:Private collection, Europe, prior to 1994.with Ancient Art International, MA, prior to 2000.Private collection, New York.Anonymous sale; Christie's, New York, 3 June 2009, lot 160.with Sands of Time Ancient Art, Washington D.C., 2020.Acquired by the present owner from the above.Cf. F. Buranelli, The Etruscans, Legacy of a Lost Civilisation, 1992, no. 14; he notes that there are only seven known examples of red impasto ware urns from Cerveteri of this type, to which this lot must be added. One side of this rare and unusual urn shows six warriors arranged in two confronting parades of three men: one group are nude apart from helmets, and carry shields, the other group are heavily armed, wearing tunics, greaves and helmets, and carry spears as well as shields. Each shield is decorated with a unique device, emphasising the individuality of each warrior and suggesting that this is a scene from life, and not myth. The other side depicts five nude men in discussion: the three to the left are bearded and have their arms raised, seemingly in supplication, with the outermost holding a shield, while the two to the right are also nude, the innermost seemingly in discussion with the leader of the other group, the man behind him holding a shield and spear. It is tempting to see a continuous narrative between the two scenes: does one side capture two armies, about to engage in battle, demarcated by one carrying spears and one not, and with slightly different style helmets, while the other side depicts the victor in discussion with the defeated? If so, we can imagine that the urn was made for a victorious warrior. One short panel at the end of the urn shows two confronting spear-holding warriors, the other end is filled with a chequerboard design. A frieze of birds adorn the lid.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
