Rare early pocket book / purse, dating from C 1690-1720, the design of central urn with large scale flowers shows five pairs of birds and a pair of butterflies, composed of from metal and silk threads and polychrome threads. 9.5 x 15.5 cm Pocket purses were worn under ladies outer garments from the mid 17th to 18th Century, the pattern of pairs of birds within the design became popular during the time of the dual monarchy of William & Mary 1689-1694.The Met Museum, New York has a pocket purse of similar design in silver and red, . Provenance: Purchased from Corner Store, bottom of Salisbury Street, St George, Bristol in 1938 and thus by decent.Condition. Working order, panel between case and base replaced.
