An impressive George III scarlet lacquer table clock, John Taylor, London, late 18th century. The five-pillar twin fusee rack and bell striking movement now with deadbeat escapement, the backplate engraved with symmetrical foliate scrolls, the 8 inch brass break-arch dial with recessed shaped silvered nameplate engraved John Taylor, London to the matted centre, within an applied silvered Roman numeral chapter ring with Arabic five minutes, the angles with foliate scroll cast spandrels beneath STRIKE/SILENT dial flanked by conforming mounts to arch, now in an elaborate case with flambeau urn finials to the bell-top upstand decorated in gilt with bird inhabited foliage above gilt blind fret infill and four further finials to the break-arch cornice, the front with panels of figures within terrace landscapes to door surround flanked by finely chased gilt metal female caryatid corner mounts, the sides with brass handle above rectangular windows, on concave moulded base with shaped apron and turned brass pendant feet, 73cm high overall. John Taylor is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as working in London circa 1780. Although it appears that the movement and dial did not start out life in this case they are certainly 'in period'. The case is very rare as it retains most of its original decoration and would respond very well to sympathetic restoration. Martinot a Paris, A 19th century French blonde tortoiseshell and brass inlaid bracket clock in the Louis XIV Boulle style, the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell, the backplate stamped 'C Taylor & Son, Paris & London', the shaped rectangular case with gilt metal mounts, urn finials and female caryatids and maskheads, the glazed door enclosing a gilt metal dial with black Roman numerals to the white enamel Roman cartouche chapters and engraved with outside Arabic minutes, with the white enamel plaque signed 'Martinot a Paris', height 50.5cm, a/f. *The Martinot clockmaking dynasty was founded in 1549 by Gilbert Martinot and continued into the late 19th century. Charles Taylor & Son are recorded as working in London and Paris from before1840 until 1881.
An 18th century North Italian walnut and olive wood veneered bureau cabinet with inlaid bandings, the upper part with an architectural scroll broken pediment and cartouche mirror plate etched with a design of an urn of flowers and foliage, the interior fitted with pigeon holes, small drawers and a central enclosed cupboard, the whole enclosed by a pair of domed arch bevelled mirror panel doors, the lower part having a sloping hinged fall enclosing a shaped and fitted interior with small drawers, pigeon holes, central enclosed cupboard and well with sliding cover, containing three long block fronted drawers below on a moulded base with bun-shaped feet, 120cm wide x 245cm high.
