A mid 19th Century Anglo Indian padoukwood octagonal centre table by Deschamps & Co, Madras, with egg and dart carved edge to the top, serpentine frieze pierced and carved with foliate scrolls and cartouches and on four similarly carved double scroll supports, joined by confirming stretchers, centred by an urn finial, 131cm diameter (4ft 3 1/2in), the underside labelled ‘Deschamps and Co, Madras’, inscribed 2082 IM, also with paper label ‘Dowager Lady Napier and Ettrick’ ** Descamps & Co exhibited at the Paris Universal Exhibition, 1878-British India Section. ** Lady Napier’s husband was Francis 10th Lord Napier and 1st Baron Ettrick KT, PC, (1819-1898), a Scottish polyglot diplomat and colonial administrator. He served as the British Minister to the United States from 1857 to 1859, Netherlands from 1859 to 1860, Russia from 1861 to 1864, Prussia from 1864 to 1866. His most important appointment was as Governor of Madras 1866-1872 and on the assassination of the Earl Mayo, acted temporarily as Viceroy of India February-May 1872. He died in Florence in December 1898. Anne Jane Charlotte, Lady Napier and Ettrick (1824-1911) was the grand daughter of Arthur Saunders Gore, 2nd Earl of Arran. She died at Ettrick Cottage in 1911.
An onyx and enamel French ‘four-glass’ mantel clock having an eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half-hours on a gong, the gilt-brass dial having black Roman numerals with champleve enamel decoration to the centre and bezel and with decorative blued steel hands, with further enamel work repeated to the visible pendulum bob and various parts of the gilt-brass & onyx glazed recatangular ‘four-glass’ case, including to the tapered corner columns, shaped base, top and urn, height: 41cm.

Tooke, a French gilt-metal and porcelain mantel clock having an eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half-hours on a bell with an outside countwheel, the shaped case having pink porcelain panels with painted floral decoration to the front and sides with the matching porcelain dial having blued steel fleur-de-lys hands, surmounted with a matching urn, height: 42cm. * W.H. Tooke is recorded as having a retail outlet in Liverpool in the mid-to-late nineteenth century selling clocks imported from Paris where he is also recorded.
