A pair of George III mahogany elbow chairs, circa 1770, possibly by John Linnell, each cartouche shaped and moulded back surmounted by a carved twin handled urn issuing bellflowers, the serpentine shaped padded arms with scroll and bellflower carved terminals, each serpentine fronted seat above moulded tapering cabriole legs surmounted by carved anthemion terminals Provenance: Private Collection, London, Purchased from Hotspur Ltd by Princess Jah, 14th March 1972 and previously with Ginsberg and Levy, New York Closely related patterns for Louis XV style ‘Cabriolet Chairs’ were published in Thomas Chippendale’s Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker’s Director, 1762, pl. XXIII and Thomas Malton’s Compleat Treatise on Perspective, 1775, pl. XXXIII, fig. 131. The present armchairs are also of a configuration often associated with John Cobb, based on related furniture which was supplied for Erddig, Denbighshire (J. Cragg, 'Room for improvement, the re-arrangement of room furnishings at Erddig', Apollo, April 2002, p. 38, fig. 4). Payments to John Cobb were made by Philip Yorke I of Erdigg in 1770 (Erddig, Guide Book, 1978, p.g).

AN 18TH CENTURY FRENCH SMALL-SWORD OF HMS MARS AND HERCULE INTEREST, 73.5cm triangular section incurved blade, tip lacking, characteristic copper gilt hilt, the inside of the guard engraved Thos Southey Taken April 21st 1798, D-shaped knuckle guard, urn form pommel, wire bound grip. An associated brass plaque states that the above item was a sword taken by midshipman Thos. Southey RN during the action in which HMS Mars captured the French ship "Hercule" April 21st 1798.
