A beautiful Nicoya jaguar urn from Costa Rica, ca. 1200 - 1500 AD. This excellent Pataky Polychrome effigy vessel is 11-3/4 in. high and depicts a jaguar deity. It is elaborately decorated with the various stylized designs including jaguar heads and elements of the man/jaguar motifs. The hollow, fang-studded head, as well as the legs, contain rattles. Intact, with minor repair to one leg and extensive mineral deposits overall. Cf. "Art of Costa Rica", pages 168 - 171 from the Sackler collection. (CR1390)
