A PAIR OF FRENCH SILVER-MOUNTED FLINTLOCK HOLSTER PISTOLS FOR PRESENTATION TO AN AFRICAN OR EASTERN POTENTATE BY LAMOTTE AINE À ST ETIENNE, CIRCA 1830 with browned swamped barrels formed in two-stages, fitted with silver fore-sights on a large gilt flowerhead bed, decorated with gilt classical urns, flowers and stars at the medians, the breeches decorated with gilt celestial motifs and thunderbolts on a finely matted ground, struck on the left of the breeches with St Etienne marks (Neue Støckel 8745, the gold with small losses), engraved tangs fitted with the back-sights and retained by gilt screws, flush-fitting locks signed on a silver oval beneath the rainproof pans enclosed by a pair of fronds, fitted with bevelled 'French' cocks, platinum-lined pans and steel springs with rollers, figured walnut full stocks profusely inlaid in silver wire with scrolls, leafy tendrils and flowers over the greater part of their surface, including a bouquet issuant from an urn behind the rear ramrod-pipe and a further bouquet behind the barrel tangs, the fore-ends inset with an engraved silver plaque in place of the ramrod channel, full silver mounts cast and chased in low relief, comprising solid side-plates decorated with foliage and garlands, trigger-guards, spurred pommels and escutcheon en suite, and no provision for ramrods 29.5 cm; 11 5/8 in barrels (2) Joseph, Jean and Jean-Baptiste Lamotte were three generations of St Etienne gunmakers recorded circa 1716-1856. Jean held a significant exhibition of weapons in Smirna (Izmir), Turkey, and is famous for his deluxe weapons that were made for the Eastern market.

A SILVER-HILTED SMALL-SWORD, WILLIAM KINMAN, LONDON, 1779-80, RETAILED BY LOXHAM with German hollow-triangular blade etched and gilt with scrolls, classical figures and 'Me Fecit Solingen' on a blued panel over the lower portion (faded), silver hilt of classical design, comprising oval guard, a pair of straight quillons with slightly drooping globular terminals, a small pair of arms, knuckle-guard, urn-shaped pommel and the grip bound with copper wire between silver collars, in its silver-mounted parchment-covered scabbard with chape, middle-band and locket, the latter two chased with scrollwork and the locket signed 'Loxham Royal Exchange' (expertly lacquered throughout) 78.5 cm; 3 in blade William Kinman was born in 1728, is recorded as a prominent silver hilt maker and also a founding member of the Founders' Company of London.
