A French late 19th century/early 20th century ormolu mounted bois satine, fruitwood and stained sycamore marquetry commodeafter the original commode by Jean-Henri RiesenerOf breakfront D-shaped outline, the moulded marble top above two long triple panelled drawers, the central panel inlaid sans traverse with a Neoclassical ewer, a basket overflowing with fruit, flowers and ribbon-tied garden implements and an urn, flanked by two smaller flowerhead-embedded trelliswork panels inlaid sans traverse, the panels mounted with one putto emblematic of Justice and the other putto emblematic of Temperance, surmounted by a ribbon-tied entwined laurel branch and sunburst mount centred with an Apollo mask, over an apron mounted with a central globe with three fleur du lys, interspersed by four ormolu caryatids modelled as Mars, Hercules, Prudence and Temperance, each bowed end door with rosette embedded trelliswork inlay and each mounted with ribbon-tied floral swags and two different military trophies, enclosing two shelves, on four stiff-leaf and acanthus mounted tapering supports and sabots, 207cm wide x 79cm deep x 99cm high, (81in wide x 31in deep x 38 1/2in high)Footnotes:The design of the offered lot closely follows a commode supplied in 1775 by Jean-Henri Riesener (1734-1806) to Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. This original was made for the Chambre de Roi at Versailles and was intended to replace a model executed by Antoine-Robert Gaudreaux (1680-1746) and Jaques Caffieri (1678-1755) in 1739, the latter having been previously provided for the Royal Bedchamber during the reign of Louis XV. The central panel on Riesener's commode was inlaid with the cyphers of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette which, following the start of the Revolution in 1789, was replaced with a pastoral scene, also evident on the present example. This highly important and influential piece of 18th century cabinet making is now housed in the Musee Conde, Chateau de Chantilly.A number of virtually identical commodes to the offered lot have sold at auction. A Georgian enamel memorial pendant, the pear-shaped pink and white enamel panel decorated with a pair of winged cherubs holding a laurel wreath above a funerary urn, with the initials SW, bordered by a white enamel Italian inscription 'la stima il rammarico el dolore sempre rinova nel mio cuore', translated as 'the esteem, the regret and the pain always renewed in my heart', glazed locket verso containing hairwork spray, bordered by a black enamel inscription 'in memory of the best parent and most valuable friend', gold mounted, length 2.7cmCondition report: Heavy wear and rubbing to enamel winger cherubs, causing losses to the detail. Scattered scuffs, scratches, chips and nicks throughout the enamel and mount to both sides, with some losses to the enamel. Dust and dirt residue to hair compartment, scuffs and nicks to glazed panel. The hinge is functioning and the pendant opens/closes tightly. Width 1.95cm. Metal standard is untested. Gross weight approx. 5.8gm.
A George III silver bottle coaster, the pierced sides with gadrooned border and applied swag and urn decoration, having turned hardwood base and shaped and pierced feet, London 1771, 12cm wide, and another, of plain dished form, London 1814, 14cm wide (maker's marks on both rubbed). (2)Condition report: Both good overall, though marks fairly worn. The plain one has a few minor dings and scratches.
A pair of George III Irish silver sauce tureens and covers, of twin handled classical urn form, having part fluted decoration on oval pedestal bases, by Thomas Jones, Dublin 1787 & 1788, crested, 25.5cm wide, 41.5oz overall. (2)Condition report: One lid is 1787, the other and both bases are 1788 - this lid doesn't fit well and may be from another when formerly there may have been more in the set. The lid is quite dented and mis-shapen to the edge, with a small area of damage near ladle recess, the other lid also has some dents and knocks. Marks reasonably clear.
