A late 17th century/early 18th century silver-mounted tortoiseshell-veneered quarter-repeating table clock with Iden Collection ProvenanceGeorge Etherington, London The caddy topped case surmounted by a cast figural handle above silver scroll and mask mounts to the caddy framed by four flaming urn finials over an intricately moulded cornice, the glazed sides with pierced sound frets, the front door with further silver mounts, on a moulded base and four silver foliate button feet. The front door applied to the inside with the original Iden Collection label, numbered 1817 and signed ETHERINGTON. The 7 inch square brass dial with engraved acanthus leaf border and upper spandrels framing the silver subsidiary arcs for rise-and-fall regulation and strike/not strike, the lower silver winged cherub spandrels framing the silver Roman and Arabic chapter ring, the matted centre with chamfered mock pendulum aperture and blued steel hands. The twin gut fusee movement united by five knopped and finned pillars, with pivoted verge escapement (with later fancy apron), rack striking on a bell and pull quarter repeat on three bells and hammers, the backplate deliberately larger and with single line border framing the symmetrical pattern of foliate scrolls centred by a wheatear oval cartouche signed Geo Etherington London. A most interesting late 17th century ebonised single-handed alarm timepiecePeter WalkerThe case with shallow caddy top surmounted by a tied-bud handle framed by four urn finials on the simple moulded cornice, the sides with glazed panels to a moulded base and later block feet. The 5.75inch square brass dial with single line border enclosing the winged cherubs head spandrels, the silvered chapter ring with Roman hours, meeting-arrowhead half-hour markers and an inner quarter hour track, the finely matted centre with curved mock pendulum aperture, ringed winding squares and a silvered alarm-setting disc centred on a blued steel hand. The single gut fusee movement with small plates measuring 13cms x 9.5cms (5.25ins x 3.75ins) united by four vase shaped pillars, the going train with gut fusee to a pivoted verge escapement and short pendulum with pear-shaped bob, the alarm train with spring barrel and typical double-headed hammer acting on the bell above. The backplate with single line border and full foliate engraving of seven flowerheads, mainly anenomes and cross-hatched flower buds emanating from a central primrose around the barrel arbor. Lot 1409

A 19th century Chinese hardwood inlaid mother of pearl urn stand, raised on cabriole type legs united by stretchers. Height 46 cm, top width 38 cm (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The top has water stains and discolouration. There is also a crack running from the central section of timber from the bottom left-hand side up through the mother of pearl. Some of the mother of pearl sections are missing and some are raised. The stand itself is structurally sound. There is one joint at the top rear which has separated slightly but this is still solid. The base section is tidy throughout.

AN ITALIAN BAROQUE CREAM PAINTED CONSOLE TABLE OF RARE FORM, VENICE, CIRCA 1720Having a Sienna marble top, supported by "Chinese" busts in feathered headdresses on scrolled legs ending in paw feet, joined by a scrolled X-form stretcher with a central finial of an urn on griffin supports 88cm high, 154cm wide, 58cm deep The bold exotic character and feathered headdresses of the female busts supporting this console table distinguish it from other consoles where the use of upward-gazing bust supports is prevalent. Feathered headpieces are also occasionally found on morato or blackamoor figures carved and decorated in the Venetian manner. An Identical table, almost certainly the pair to the offered lot although having lost its carving to the apron, was sold; Christie's, New York, Continental Furniture and Works of Art, 26th Sep 2001, Lot 119 ($30,550).
