Walter Steinberg has been a well-known figure at fairs, sales and events for many years. Born in 1922 in Philadelphia, Walter has had a life-long passion for collecting. A long-time resident in London, he has now retired to New York and decided that the time has come to pass on the antiquities and coins he has collected over his lifetime. Walter acquired coins and artefacts that interested him, so his collection, although containing many lovely examples, also contains many affordable specimens. Much of the material has been unavailable to the market for 30 to 50 years. Walter hopes that the items he collected will now find new homes with the next generation of collectors. TimeLine Auctions Ltd arranges printed catalogue rostrum Auctions, eAuctions and Timed Auctions where we offer antiquities, ancient artefacts / artifacts, antiques, collectibles, coins, medals and books for public sale. A Royal Worcester urn shaped vase decorated with landscape scene and figure on a riverbank, signed C Johnson, date marked for 1911, 13.3 cm high, together with a Royal Worcester cup and cover decorated with landscape panels and royal blue foliate spray panels, date marked for 1912, 10.75 cm diameter. CONDITION REPORTS Urn shaped vase : whilst overall look is good, with good colour and detail, there is a crack behind the right-hand scroll handle from the rim to the handle approx. 1.5 cm and then from the handle towards the image approx. 3.5 cm, gilding throughout appears to be a little rough and ready in places particularly to the foot rim, glaze to the base of the foot rim has some bubbilng and wear and tear. Cup and cover : cover with some signs of scratching and wear and tear to the gilding and craqueleur to the glaze particularly to the image side, the underside has some discolouration to the edge, actual cup has a browned surface crack possibly a firing crack as it goes all the way through visible from the underside and glazed over - perhaps just browned over time, otherwise overall condition appears good, though it must be noted that beneath the gilding there appears to be the odd bubble in the glaze and image to one side has yellow enamel bleeding into the white border bottom right corner, and the gilding to the foot appears to have scratch marks all round it - possibly done in application, though difficult to tell, base has some craqueleur to the glaze.
A Japanese Meiji period Satsuma ware vase in the manner of Kinkozan, the urn shaped body with narrow flared rim and flattened shoulders decorated with honeycomb and floral sprays, the main body decorated with figures by riverside with further figures on a boat in the background and ornate panel of garden flowers verso, all on a blue ground decorated in polychrome and gilt with floral sprays, on a circular foot, 18 cm high. CONDITION REPORTS Rim of the lid may have been restored as feels slightly warmer than the rest to touch and gilt painted line seems quite crudely painted compared to the rest of the piece, overall there is some crazing to the glaze in some areas visible on close inspection particularly to the bottom edges of the white panel with figures, otherwise some slight rubbing in places and general wear conducive with age. There is a stamp to the base but it is impossible read as it is not coloured and just a stamp in the glaze.
