A French patinated bronze ewer, to the model by Sigisbert-Francois Michel (1728-1811), 19th century, the ovoid and scroll handled body surmounted by a bearded triton holding the horns of a dolphin or other sea creature, above a swag of rushes, descending to a waisted circular socle and square plinth, 46cm high, 22cm wideThe present aquatic-themed urn is derived from a plaster model by the sculptor Sigisbert-Francois Michel, exhibited at the Academy of St Luke in Paris in 1774.The model proved to be so successful, that it was soon reinterpreted by various sculptors in different media, such as John Flaxman, who created a version of the ewer called 'Sacred to Neptune' for Josiah Wedgwood in circa 1775 (see Victoria & Albert Museum, London 2397-1901).An early cast of this model, accompanied by its Bacchic-themed counterpart and heightened with gilt, is in the collection of the Getty Museum, Los Angeles, 2015.61.Another 19th century pair, similar in casting to the present lot, was sold at Christie's London, 22 May 2003, lot 39 (£14,340).Condition Report: The ewer bears the usual minor marks, scratches and scuffs overall consistent with age and use.The patina is dark overall and fairly even, with some slightly warmer tones where it's worn to the handle and edges of the socle. There are a handful of small circa 2-4cm patches particularly to the reverse and the edges of the ovoid body, where the surface seems slightly raised or inconsistent, which may indicate a lacquer or refreshed patination of the surface. There is also some slight flaking to the surface colour to the inside of the lip, and one or two tiny dents/knocks to the body.Structurally no damages have been detected at the time of writing this report.Condition Report Disclaimer

Lot 344

A Louis XVI giltwood and marble topped demi lune console table, circa 1785, in the manner of George Jacob or Johann Friedrich Funk II, 87cm high, 141cm wide, 55.5cm deep For a closely related example of table see, Christie's, New York, 9th October 2013, The Art of Collecting: Three Private Collections, Lot 725 ($9,375). Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions comensurate with age and use. Some old chips and splits and some old repairs. some small losses. Various wear and old loss to gilding. Evidence of later re-gilding / refreshing of gilding in areas throughout. Very little sign of old worm damage. A very small number of holes are visible. Other areas of old worm holes may possibly have been covered by filler, painting or gilding. In the photograph of the table, the top appears to rise slightly away from the top of the table. This is due to the fact that there is an old repaired clean break to the marble on that side of the table and the way it has been repaired has caused it to rise slightly. Under the base framework (i.e. the element supporting the urn) there are two applied strips of timber to secure joints. These appear to be original or atleast of significant age. There are no signs of any additional floral swags being in position to the rear stretchers of the base. The table stands level on the floor but as the table is of significant age and the marble has been repaired it may not sit truly perfectly due to minor movement in the timber or joints over time. The legs are solid/ secure in their joints. There is some slight movement/ slightly mishapen element to each leg due to age and weight on them and being hand turned/ carved. There are no makers marks visible. Please refer to the additional images if required for visual reference to condition.   Condition Report Disclaimer

Known components of the recipe for this distinctive pale orange material include ball clay from Dorset or Devon, flint and sand, though there was some secrecy about the exact proportions of ingredients used.Eleanor Coade and her daughter, who was also called Eleanor, ran a successful and prolific manufactory in Lambeth, and produced statuary and ornament for many royal and aristocratic houses, including by appointment to King George III, and the Prince Regent. The design of the present urns appears in Coade's 1778 trade catalogue, no. 94 (plate marked N. 2 in the Sir John Soane museum copy of the catalogue).A pair of finials of identical design, in that case not presented on plinths, were sold at Christie's, the Michael Roberts Collection of Garden ornaments, 27 September 2004, lot 278 (£35,850).A pair of similar Coade stone pedestals with rams' masks to the corners, though now lacking the swags it once had, supports a pair of vases after the Antique at Chiswick House, London. The exposed edges are a little chipped in places including the fluting to the ovoid bodies, as is to be expected from the lot's age and brittle material. Losses and nibbles to edges of plinths (tops and bases), one with hairline cracking to top. Surfaces of plinths quite weathered in places. Small and quite subtle restorations in a number of areas, including to the edges of the fluting on one of the domed covers, the circular top edges, and to an extent, the bases and socles. The acorn finials have darker areas to the leaves, possibly repairs/retouching. However, despite the issues stated above, the urns retain their shape and integrity of design, and remain in highly presentable condition. There is evidence of a light brown residue near one of the socles, suggesting a possible repair.
