A pair of Neo-Classical style breakfront side tables, the crossbanded satinwood tops inlaid with fan motif and bell flower decoration, the painted base with a frieze of anthemion, with classical urn, vitruvian scroll and bell flower motifs, W.4ft 7in.Removed from Halecat House, Cumbria.These tables are designed in the late 18th century 'Antique Roman fashions' populised by Robert and James Adam, Works in Architecture 1773'.The painted decoration of the present lot with its stylised anthemion and amphora recall a design by Robert Adam of the commode supplied to the Countess of Derby. The taste for painted furniture and decoration was also championed by the architect James Wyatt 1746-1813, a contemporary and rival of Robert Adam whose major neo-classical houses include Heveningham Hall in Suffolk, Packington Hall in Staffordshire and Dodington Park in Gloucestershire.
