Lot 5018

An Attractive Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the upper guards carved and pierced quite elaborately in a vertical panel, silvered and gilded. The fine gorge sticks are designed with two side oval features, bordered in gold, filled with classical objects, the central sticks featuring a large lidded urn. Gilded and silvered throughout. The vellum leaf, mounted à l'Anglaise, is painted centrally with a cottage by the river, from which can be viewed the nearby church and a sailing boat on the water. A lady looks out from the half open door, another lady in pink stands on the path, and two gentlemen in hats and one with a walking cane, approach. The scene is bordered in brown with gold painted detail. The reserves have a light and airy feel with delicate flowers and tendrils, some in bunches, others merely a single bloom, and intermittent tiny gold stars. The verso is painted with a single flower. Guard length approx. 10.75 inches or 27.5cm. Together with A Fan in Similar Vein, the central cartouche of the vellum leaf mounted à l'Anglaise, painted with two young couples taking their leisure by the riverside, one gentleman fishing, the other playing the pipe, a goat and dog at his feet. Two side vignettes are painted with tokens of love, and a beehive. The monture is silvered. The upper guards are incised to give an unusual basket weave effect, over which are carved two paisley boteh, and flowers. The gorge sticks have the same ground, and rather unusual design, complementing the boteh on the upper guards. Probably Dutch. The verso is painted in pastels with a simple spray of flowers. Guard length approx. 10.5 inches or 27cm. (2). The first fan is surprisingly sound and clean for the period. The upper guard lacks one small detail, a twisted white metal bar which is present in the lower guard. The monture on the second fan is unusual, and the silvering retains shine.

Lot 5022

An 18th Century Ivory Fan, the monture Chinese Export, with some quite unusual features to the carving. From the shoulder, the carving is designed in bands, quite geometrical, other than the horizontal band at the shoulder, and the curve and quasi heart shape lower down the gorge. The double leaf, in pale yellow, has a central cartouche, engraved and lightly coloured en grisaille, with a detailed image of an 18th century lady tenderly gazing at her young child. The scene is bordered with small sequins, which are also a feature of painted swags to the top of the leaf, alternating with small colourful painted flowers. Together with An 18th Century Ivory Fan, French, the cream silk leaf painted with figures in fine and extravagant 18th century costume, the central cartouche a colourful depiction of a lady and her suitor at the altar of love, with two white doves, a lady's companion observing. The suitor appears to be leaning on a sheep, to his right. To the left, an oval vignette featuring a musician wearing a powdered wig, breeches and a long coat. To the right, a lady in virginal white open robe, large plumed hat, wistfully gazing into nowhere. Decorative urns full of flowers, and tasteful side borders with scrolling and classical objects fill the reserves. Gold sequins border all three painted scenes. The verso, a fine gauze, is plain. Guard length 11 inches or 28cm; and A Third Fan, 18th Century French, the cream silk leaf mounted on bone and painted very classically with an urn, flowers spilling from the top, other flowers including bright parrot tulips to the reserves, and further decorated with swags of small gold sequins. Simple monture lightly gilded. The verso is plain, note initials in ink to the left, possibly CJE/MD. Guard length approx. 11 inches or 28cm (3). The first fan has replaced upper guards, being more European figurative than Chinese Export. Some general soiling, seen from the verso. Well executed facial features. The second fan has been framed, probably due to the delicate state of the silk, the gauze backing seen to have losses, and lots of repair has been undertaken. The third fan has damage and repair to the leaf, the clear tape now yellowed. The gilding is dull.

Lot 5028

A Good Mid-18th Century Ivory Fan, the monture of white mother-of-pearl, silvered and gilded. The upper guard features a large classical urn. The gorge sticks, shaped with narrow ovals on four sticks, the ovals contained within straight sticks on others, are also decorated in classical fashion. The theme of ovals continues to the leaf, the recto having four ovals, equally spread, the reserves featuring chickens to the left and a dog chasing a hare to the right. The outer painted ovals depict harbour scenes, with stone towers, sailing boats and workers about their business, related seemingly to fishing. The central ovals feature gentle pastoral scenes, with a suitor offering a flower to a maiden, and a lady seated, having gathered flowers. The verso is plain. Guard length approx. 10 and 5/8 inches or 27cm. Together with A Second Ivory Fan, the colourful double leaf depicting a maiden and her suitor, the latter in uniform with breastplate and plumed helmet, paying homage before an altar of the Goddess of hunting, Diana, her hunting dog to her side, Cupid in flight, his quiver and arrows on the ground beneath him. The monture is carved and pierced, with a central cartouche. The verso features simple floral sprays painted in gold. Guard length approx. 10 inches or 25.5cm (2) . The first fan has been framed. probably due to repair seen on the lower guard, and glue noted on the other side. The leaf is actually very clean and sound. Some rubbing to the folds. Slight crumpling to the top edge of the leaf. Very slightly splayed when re-folded. The frame is available within the hammer price, should the purchaser wish to take it. The second fan is quite badly damaged, with full splits to some folds, a broken guards and repairs to a broken gorge.

Lot 5077

A Mid-19th Century Mother-of-Pearl Fan with deep and heavy gorge, the double paper leaf a hand coloured lithograph showing an outdoor social gathering with couples in their finery, some ladies with folding fans. The gorge, in white mother-of-pearl, is extensively carved and pierced, the central focus, in gold, offset by a lattice carving, showing ladies in extravagant gowns and a suitor on bended knee. The sticks shoulders are cut away before meeting the narrow leaf. The verso with cream background features a medieval castle with two couples, the men in tunics, listening to music. Some floral gilding to the gorge. Fitted with an elaborately shaped gold metal loop inset with green stones. Guard length approx. 10.5 inches or 26.5cm. Together with A 19th Century Painted Brisé Fan with tortoiseshell thumb guards, the recto painted in Vernis Martin fashion, with young people gathering to play music in the outdoors. Two couples in 18th century costume, and two further maidens gather flowers for garlands and generally pass the leisure hours in company of their friends. The gorge is painted in delicate fashion with flowers in a central cartouche, and dragonflies and wild flowers to two side vignettes. The verso is painted with a riverside scene with habitation on the opposite bank and a grand garden urn on pedestal to the right. Guard length approx. 7.75 inches or 20cm (2). The first fan has complete splits to the leaf in two places, repairs to the leaf as seen from the verso, and some light staining or glue residue. Gorge sticks show signs of old repairs. This fan has been framed and will not re-fold. Frame available within the hammer price should it be required. The brisé's ribbon is defective.

Lot 5089

Two 19th Century Ivory Fans with unusual montures, the first with a narrow leaf thus a smaller upper guard, this being carved with a classical urn, and silvered. The lower guards and gorge widening at the shoulder and descending with roundels at each side of a central V, some gilded, some silvered, tapering into a single row of slightly larger roundels until meeting the head. Shaped white metal loop. The narrow black gauze leaf, embroidered with sequins, is edged with black ''blonde'' handmade bobbin lace. Guard length approx. 10.75 inches or 27cm. Together with Another Ivory Fan with interesting monture, skeleton to the gorge, guards wedge-shaped with wide tips, the upper section carved with flowers and a cherub within a sloping frame. The lower guard sections are carved with more such frames, these enclosing different features such as a bird or a ladybird. The gorge sticks, of differing widths, either continue the ''frame'' design or alternate with flowers, with traces of gilding. The double paper leaf is divided into sections, three of which are painted. The central cartouche depicts a lady and her suitor who appears to be carrying a set of bagpipes. To each side, smaller vignettes feature a lady in a rural setting, or a man in similar surroundings. In between, panels painted with pale blue backgrounds feature delicate flowers or appliqués of coloured foil. All sections are bordered in gold, with an exterior background in dull turquoise finished with gold. The verso is painted more crudely with a landscape, and a larger version of the lady in the vignette to the right of the recto. Contained in a card fan box with glazed green paper to the exterior, the inside lid with paper label for Duvelleroy, the name printed on a folding fan, and the addresses for London at 167 Regent Street and Paris, at 17 Passage des Panoramas. Guard length approx. 10.25 inches or 26cm (2). For the first fan, note wear to the black gauze. One gorge stick has been repaired from the mid-point to the tip. Another three are in need of similar restoration. The silvering is now dull, whereas a lot of the gilded roundels are still bright. Fan 2 has a grey look to the monture but this might simply be that it needs extensive cleaning. One gorge stick is broken with a section missing. Some of the foil appliqués are missing from the leaf. The box lacks one end. The label is clean.

Lot 5261

A Panel of 18th Century Coloured Embroidery on very fine lawn, a part-flounce, the silk embroidery worked in large and repeated motifs. To the reserves, fine and colourful silk embroidery of flowers and leaves, supplemented by some gold metal thread work. Bottom and sides are edged with gold bobbin lace. The top edge is turned under, and a pale turquoise fine silk panel has been added as backing approx. 18 inches or 46cm by 6 inches or 15cm; two cream silk panels, probably part sleeve ruffles, embroidered in tambour stitch in strong colours of red, various greens and mustard, both gathered near the top, backed in part with acid green silk, one fragment edged with bright green and yellow bobbin lace, the lace for the other panel detached but present.
