A rare Cambrian pearlware Mug, c.1790, of cylindrical form, transfer printed in blue-black with silhouettes of George III, Caroline, Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette formed from the outlines of two candelabra, the French 'portraits' of France flanked by a broken crown, and all inscribed 'A New Puzzle of Portraits Striking Likenefses of the King & Queen of England and the late King & Queen of France', 9cm The Mysterious Urn was copied from a print drawn for the Loyalists of the guillotined Louis XVI and Queen Antoinette (1783), the disguised portraits ensuring that, if raided, their oppressors would not link the 'innocent' urn with their royal support. They ordered copies from the Chinese very soon after the atrocity. Since Britain was at war with France at the date of this mug, it is unlikely to have been supportive, although revolutionary France was much admired by the lower orders who hated the ghastly (as they saw it) Hanoverians (particularly Prinny). More likely it was simply made as an amusing trick. CONDITION REPORT: Crazing throughout the mug. Crack to top rim. Firing crack to base rim. Dark lines to the base, probably to glaze. Please view images (available upon request).
