An oak thirty-hour longcase clock, Will. Russell, Wootton, circa 1740. The four-pillar outside countwheel bell-striking movement with 12 inch square brass dial with calendar aperture to the Hoho bird and foliate scroll engraved matted centre within an applied Roman numeral silvered chapter ring with Arabic five minutes and fleur de lys half hour markers and signed Will. Rufsell along lower edge, with bird and urn pattern spandrel applied angles, the case with moulded cornice above long trunk door and reduced plinth base, 195cm high. William Russell is recorded in Loomes, Brian Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World Volume 2 as working in Wootton, Bedfordshire up to 1770.
James Plunkett & Co., Warwick, A fine overmantel, Victorian, second half 19th century carved oak, the rectangular plate with urn surmount and Philips family crest with motto 'Simplex Munditiis', including pole and entwined rope twist surround, bearing a incomplete paper label to the reverse; "34 Warwick Street, Leamington, by appointment to her Majesty the Queen". Probably for James Plunkett and Co. h.216cm., w.190cm. Provenance Probably sold Contents of Welcombe Hall, local saleroom, Stratford upon Avon, 1931 as ''a richly carved-oak over-mantel with large mirror in centre, 6ft. 3in. [not including urn finial] by 6ft. 3in. by Plunkett, Warwick" Literature Anne Stevens, The Wood Carvers of Warwick, Warwick, 1980, p. 39 The crest is that of Philips of Heath House, Staffordshire, Lancashire and Warwickshire, Fairburn's Crests, Edinburgh, 1892, Vol.1, p. 355. Probably adopted by the Phillips family of Welcombe Hall. James Plunkett and Co. were a well know cabinet makers and wood carvers in Warwickshire and had a partnership with Thomas Kendall. W
