a rare percussion screw-plug breech-loading sporting rifle by Henry Tatham Junior, London proof marks, circa 1835 built on a 17th Century Turkish barrel, the barrel forged in a fine twist pattern with flared muzzle, decorated with a series of chiselled arabesque girdles with encrusted silver borders between raised silvered bands and decorative pellets, enriched with turquoise beads on the breech, cut with threaded loading-port beneath, the latter with screw-plug incorporating a ring for a locking-lever, fitted with percussion bolster with platinum plug, hooked breech, small blued back-sight, and inlaid with a broad line of gold at the rear, with finely engraved breech tang decorated with an elaborate trophy-of-arms, bolted detented lock signed 'Hy. Tatham Junr.', engraved with scrollwork carrying a dogs' head medallion and engraved with a further martial trophy at the rear, the latter incorporating a pair of shields bearing the flag of the Union and that of the Royal House of Orleans respectively, figured walnut full stock, chequered grip and fore-end, engraved steel mounts, the butt-plate and the flat-fronted trigger-guard each decorated with differing trophies, the trigger-plate formed with neo-classical urn finials, the barrel retained by three bolts on six pelta-shaped silver washers, with 18th Century silver escutcheon cast in relief, and original wooden ramrod 101.4cm., 40.125in barrel
