Winterhalder & Hofmeier German walnut mantel clock, circa 1900, arched dial with engraved fretwork tracery, signed by the retailer J SEWILL 30 CORNHILL LONDON to the silvered chapter ring, with three supplementary dials over, movement striking on nine gongs, the case with casket hood and brass urn finials, fluted canted corners, 59cm.
Villanova Culture, 7th century BC. A biconvex ceramic funerary urn with flared everted rim, carination to the waist and single loop handle, band of incised multilinear square cells (some with motifs); the lid an inverted footed bowl with thick loop handle and two lateral lugs to the rim, incised ropework meander pattern below the rim. See Hayes, J.W. Etruscan and Italic Pottery in the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, 1985, item A1 for type. 4.5 kg total, 42cm (16 1/2"). From an old Tokyo collection; previously the property of a Japanese gentleman since the early 1970s. This type of biconical urn is typical of the Villanovan culture of the 9th–8th centuries BC. It was used to hold the ashes of human bodies after cremation. It was hand-modelled in clay by the impasto technique and decorated with incised designs, usually geometric motifs. When interred, these urns were covered by an inverted bowl or with a bronze helmet, making a statement about the status of the deceased. [No Reserve] Fine condition.

Wells, 24 Condiut St. London, etched for half length with scrolls and foliage, including a trophy of drum, halberd and flag on the inner side, nicely studded and cut steel hilt with turn down shell guard, token pas d'ane rings, crossguard and quillon, knucklebow into urn pommel, slender swollen grip, in its black PL scabbard with line engraved top mount, middle bud and chape, with 2 rings. A late 18th century officer's 5 ball hilted spadroon, straight fullered blade 32½", with traces of maker's name (?) at forte, and crowned GR cypher in fuller on both sides, steel hilt with traces of plating, plain crossguard and quillon, slender knucklebow incorporating the 5 balls, facetted urn shaped pommel, facetted ivory grip with traces of panelling. A 19th cent French mourning sword, hollow triangular section blade 30½", marked "Coulaux et Cie, Klingenthal" at forte, darkened brass hilt, shallow ovoid dish guard with pierced and scalloped border, shallow pas d'ane rings, flattened crossguard, quillon and knucklebow into urn pommel, slightly swollen grip, the hilt panelled and studded overall, in its leather scabbard with plain locket and ring, and chape with stud tip. GC, with a pleasing patina.
