A French 18-Bore Percussion Rifled Take-Down CarbineBy Le Page, Arquer.er Ordinaire Du Roi, No. 1872, Dated 1816Converted from flintlock, with bright polygroove rifled barrel inlaid with a gold arrow on the slender sighting flat and with silver fore-sight, the breech signed in gold capitals and inlaid with two gold fronds, octagonal breech, border engraved tang decorated with foliage and a flaming urn, flat bevelled lock with gold-lined maker's oval between gold-inlaid branches of laurel, engraved with crowned fleur-de-lys within the order of the St. Esprit on the tail, and with later foliate scrollwork, hammer decorated en suite and with thunderbolts on the nose, the inside of the lock serial numbered and dated, highly figured half-stock and butt, the latter carved with foliage behind the cheek-piece and with sprung button catch on an engraved tang at the swelling grip, border engraved steel butt-plate decorated with a loosely strung bow along each side and with a wolf with its paw in a trap on the heel tang, and later vacant escutcheon, steel mounts comprising shaped side-nail plate engraved with fruit between two swans, trigger-guard with a swan in a diamond-shaped panel within fruit and foliage on the border engraved bow, trigger-plate with finial engraved with an urn of fruit supported by two ram's heads, engraved baluster rear ramrod-pipe, silver escutcheon engraved with an Imperial coat-of-arms, under-rib with terminal at the muzzle engraved as a flaming grenade, and steel ramrod with brass collar at the tip (steel parts with some light rust patination) 43.8 cm. barrel
A very good heavy Victorian brass and metal Dog Grate, in the Adams stye, with raised decorated arched back over a large basket grate with pierced apron, on brass fluted and tapered legs with large classical urn finials, with Registration stamp on reverse, 85cms high x 86cms wide (33 1/2" x 34"). 1st century BC-1st century AD. A bronze figure of Fortuna standing in a draped stola with clasps to the shoulder(s) and band beneath the breasts; sandalled feet resting on a cruciform base; carefully dressed hair with tiara; left hand supporting a cornucopia with grapes and foliage; headdress developing to a cup supporting an urn with carinated body and flared mouth, radiating lobes to the rim, central spike within. 1.9 kg, 31cm (12 1/4"). From an important central London collection formed since the mid 1960s; thence by descent. Fair condition; one arm of the base absent, crack above the feet, urn detached.
An unusual late 19th Century inlaid mahogany cased upright piano of small proportions, by John Broadwood & Sons, No. 58838, the case inlaid with musical trophies and with raised and moulded circular paterae and oval paterae filled with urn motif within leaf and floral bandings, with turned and reeded front supports, 50ins wide x 20ins deep x 41.5ins high Provenance: This was owned by Sir George Donaldson, who founded the Musical Instrument Collection at the Royal College of Music, ordered in 1884, the case is very likely made by Wright & Mansfield
