SC 379.3d; HGC 9, 128g. 17.11g, 29mm, 1h.Mint State; highly lustrous with light golden iridescence around the devices. Preserved in spectacular condition for the type.Antiochos I was the son of Seleukos I and Apama, Seleukos' Persian wife. His date of birth is unknown, but was probably circa 320 BC as he was old enough to lead the Seleukid cavalry at the battle of Ipsos in 301. When Seleukos was assassinated in 281, Antiochos was probably in Ekbatana or Aï Khanoum, where he had maintained court ruling the eastern satrapies on behalf of his father since 294.With his accession, Antiochos faced immediate attacks by Ptolemy II in Asia Minor and revolts of the cities of Syria. He left his eldest son, Seleukos, as governor of the eastern satrapies and marched west to meet the threats, which he soon overcame. However, it was not long before his attention was once again drawn to disturbances, this time from a menacing force of warlike Celtic tribes that had crossed over the Hellespont in the winter of 278/7 and invaded Asia Minor, and also shortly thereafter renewed hostilities with Ptolemy II (First Syrian War, 274-271 BC). After defeating the Celts and receiving the title of Saviour (Soter) by the Greek cities of Asia Minor, Antiochos concluded an uneasy truce with Ptolemy which allowed him to focus on public relations and administrative work in Asia Minor. His subsequent reign was relatively peaceful, with the exceptions of sedition by his son and co-regent, Seleukos, whom he was forced to execute and replace with his younger son, the future Antiochos II, and the loss of northwest Asia Minor to Eumenes I of Pergamon. The figure of Apollo seated on the omphalos gained prominence under Antiochos, publicising his supposed descent from the god, and became the characteristic reverse type for most Seleukid precious metal coinage down through the reign of Antiochos IV."

Diademed head right / BAΣIΛEΩΣ ANTIOXOY, Apollo Delphios seated left on omphalos, holding arrow and resting hand on bow; monograms in outer left and right field. SC - (unlisted monograms); for similar obv. die, cf. SC 985.1, pl. 48 (elephant type). 16.85g, 26mm, 12h.Very Fine. Seemingly unpublished. The obverse die of this unpublished tetradrachm is possibly the same die as that of SC 985.1 (which exhibits slight die shift), or at least by the same hand. The SC catalogue describes the portraits of the die engraver as 'extraordinary works of art' and suggests that they may have been taken from life (see p. 377).The catalogue entries for SC 985-7, which are all thought to be the hand of the same artist, feature a reverse type honouring the Seleucid elephant corps. The minting of these issues remains uncertain, though it is suggested that they were produced from 203 BC onwards when Antiochos is believed to have been in Ionia. The clear link to the elephant issues demonstrated by the obverse portrait of the present piece would place this coin as part of the first attributable Apollo type reverse tetradrachms to be produced at this unknown mint, and indeed the outer left monogram seen on the reverse is similar to that shared by SC 985.1 and 987.1. First Steps: An 18th Century Fan, circa 1740's-1750's, the ivory monture carved and painted in bright colours. The guards have the addition of portraits in gilded ovals to the tips, a woman on the upper guard, a man on the lower guard. Both guards are carved with figures, cerise foil being visible beneath. The gorge sticks are shaped, with a discernible kink to the centre on some, these being painted with meandering flowers and foliage. Others have their details to the top border, where garden tools, a basket, and a dog chasing a deer are painted. A lower spray of flowers in several colours is tied in blue ribbon with a bow. The double paper leaf makes a feature of blue, mainly in the skies, and in the outline of three vignettes. The largest of these, to the centre, shows a family outside a modest home, one man fishing on the river bank. Two others are playing a game of skittles, these being cone shape and testing the ability of a man to the left who is kneeling ready to take his shot. A maid is drawing water from a well, and to the fore a young mother, dressed in pink, proudly supports a small child in a harness, tentatively taking its first steps. The side vignettes are simple, being painted with a single figure outdoors, under a vast blue sky. The verso has a large landscape, painted mainly in blue, with some shrubbery, a lone man walking next to water. Guard length 27cmBoth guards have been broken at the shoulder and repaired with metal plates. This has had some effect on the first fold to the right. Leaf folds are rubbed.
A Vibrant Mid-18th Century Fan, the vellum leaf mounted à l'anglaise having a central vignette of a courting couple, to the right a bird, insect and fruit, to the left a Chinese figure in robes together with a bird. The verso with chinoiserie elements, depicting fruit, and a bird in flight. The gorge, with a central painted vignette depicting a soldier and lady, a face on his shield, another lady and Cupid with his bow, and an obelisk, is a marvel of minute flower carving surrounding regular and repeated pierced shapes painted in two shades of blue the carving being intricate when closed and laid on the side. The guards are carved with animals and flowers, a green stone at the rivet. Guard length 29cmThe leaf is rubbed. Stain to one gorge stick. Supporting sliver of ivory to rear of one gorge stick.
A Very Fine Late 17th/Early 18th Century Painted, Carved and Pierced Ivory Brisé Fan, possibly Dutch, with twenty-eight inner sticks and two guards, and tortoiseshell thumb guards. The guards are carved with a figure and flowers in relief, their backgrounds of a deep powder blue, giving good contrast, some features gilded. Central to the gorge is a delicately painted oval vignette containing a portrait of a European lady who appears to be holding a bow, two further vignettes to either side with flowers, two pink roses and an orange parrot tulip. The body of the fan is in three main sections, each bordered with pairs of pierced and highly decorative gilded sticks, painted with Chinoiserie scenes, roses and tulips. The panel to the left shows a man seated on a stone terrace with balustrade, a small pond to his side with water lily leaves. The central scene shows ladies dressed in medieval costume, one with a wimple, gathering around a king on the ground, being tended by a lady, an elderly bearded man looking on. In the final panel a young woman is seated outside in a rural location. All panels are bordered in gold and surrounded by elaborate gilding and some repetition of the blue. The verso is a mirror image outline. The deep cream ribbon is plain, possibly a replacement .Guard length 23.5cm See Nancy Armstrong's ''The Book of Fans'' pages 60 and 61 for a brisé with similarities, described as Dutch. Some light rubbing, plus one small patch of missing paint in the panel to the right.
Jacob, Rachael and Leah, The Flight into Canaan: A Fine Early 19th Century or Earlier Ivory Fan, the guards tipped with mother of pearl and with mother of pearl thumb guards. The monture is elegantly and ornately carved, the guards with a male figure in the tips, followed by a classical female, and objects to include a diamond, shell and classical urn. The gorge is carved with a central naked figure carrying a bow and arrow, possibly Cupid, possibly a hunter. To either side is a bird, with the outer sticks filled with meandering flowers and tendrils, some being in bud, some large and fully open and with large petals. The vellum leaf, mounted à l'anglaise, depicts a woodland setting, the town in the distance behind, Jacob, now a wealthy man, with his two wives and their cow, sheep and donkeys, carrying provisions, accompanied by a servant, starting their flight into Canaan, following a souring of relations between Jacob and Leban and his sons. Two onlookers are seated to the right. The verso is plain save for painted detail on the ribs. Guard length 28cmSeen from the verso, minor repair to the leaf. Leaf quite rubbed, especially to each side.
A Slender 18th Century Ivory Fan, circa 1740, the monture decorated with straw, the double leaf an engraved mythological scene of Europa being abducted by a white bull (Zeus), by sea to Crete. Cupid fires his bow and arrow to the right of the scene. The simple verso depicts moths and a dragonfly. Both guards bear the same decoration of flowers, carved and painted, and overlaid straw panels which resemble columns. The gorge sticks are similarly decorated, but on the verso are more simple, plain ivory alternating in pairs with turquoise paint and mauve flowers. Guard length 29cmGenerally sound, all straw present, the leaf slightly foxed recto/verso, some slight loss to the leaf on the verso, hard to see. Upper guard slightly warped.
Venus and Adonis: A Fine 18th Century Mother-of-Pearl Fan, circa 1760's, the monture carved, pierced, silvered and gilded, the gorge carved with medallions. The guards both have a gilded profile, birds and symbols. The monture features six sticks in three pairs which each have two carved ovals, within which are either a portrait (male to one side, female to the other), flowers, urns, or gilded cupids. The remaining sticks are classical, lightly carved in crossbanding and highly gilded. Towards the head, all sticks are carved with small circles, in which are symbols or entwined circles. The vellum leaf, mounted à l'anglaise, has a striking use of blue and pink. In a woodland clearing, Venus, wearing blue, seated in her giant scallop shell, is holding the hand of Adonis, his cloak in pink, a grey dog lounging at his side in front of a winged cherub. Two white doves flutter to the right of Venus and in the distance a dog can be seen chasing a deer. To either side of this tender scene are two gravures, to the left showing Cupid with his bow and quiver and another winged cherub, to the right a small and a larger winged cherub. The reserves are filled with flowers, from climbing blue and yellow and lilac specimens and blue carnations, to large pink roses and some in bud. The verso is most unusually painted in orange, blue and green in dashes and irregular short brush strokes, creating movement. The centre, in comparison is painted with a young woman in blue, her straw hat with a blue ribbon, relaxing with either a dog or perhaps a lamb, as her staff lays to the side, decorated with a blue ribbon. Guard length 27cmSome folds are rubbed. From the verso, some light brown staining suggests previous use of glue for some repair.
