Albert Moulton Foweraker (1873-1942) GranadaSigned, watercolour, 35.5cm by 51cm, unframedCondition report: Unmounted, unframed and therefore relies some of the characteristics having been handled and not been framed i.e. top left-hand corner somewhat dogeared, edges in general showing some wear especially right-hand side top edge, top right-hand corner slightly dog eared, two slight abrasions, one ever so slightly punctured entirely through the sheet, approx centre and roughly 1cm away from top edge. Images can be supplied. Approximately four small vertical surface abrasions along left-hand side edge and similar along lower edge. Slight concaved bow to sheet. Lightly painted on a slightly muted palette but possibly some fading and general tempering of the colours as a result of light to moderate time staining throughout. Odd tiny foxing spots beginning to form mostly evident in the sky.

Lot 570

School of Nicholas Poussin (1594-1665) French Classical figures in an Italianate landscapeOil on canvas, 49.5cm by 97cmCondition report: In fully restored condition, fairly stiffly relined, cleaned and revarnished. The canvas has a slightly convexed bow. The surface is somewhat flattened and the paint is somewhat thinned in places as a result of the restoration process. Some surface dirt and discoloured varnish, some minor rubbing to edges. Fine cracquelure mostly throughout which is more pronounced in some areas and looking precarious with some further areas where the minor areas of paint have flaked away i.e. within the rocky outcrop far left-hand side and to a lesser extent within the foliage of the trees, left-hand side. Under the application of UV light shows likely two, possibly 3 courses of intervention and restoration with retouching and areas of strengthening across the sky. Large swathes and general strengthening within the darker tones throughout the foreground with some further more sporadic and delicate retouches likely of another date. Possible horizontal tear with associated retouching at the point where the lake meets the grassy foreground just right of centre. A furthermore condensed essentially vertical patch of retouching immediately right of the lower turret and approximately 3cm in length overall. The outlining and shadows and figures have broadly been strengthened etc. For more information please contact the department.
