George Charlton, English, portrait of a gentleman in a brown suit, shirt and bow tie, signed G. Charlton, oil on canvas board, PROVENANCE: From the Derek Sorrell Collection. Purchased in the mid 1980's from the Charlton home in New End Square through a friend of the Charlton's. George Charlton was a member of staff at Slade School of Art from 1919. He was an exhibitor at the New English Art Club since 1915 and became a member in 1925. His works have been purchased by the Tate Gallery and he has had exhibitions at various London, provincial and overseas galleries. Publications include Illustrations for Wolff's 'Anatomy for Artists' and others. h: 14 x w: 10 in.

A late 19th Century patinated Brass, Spelter and black Slate Mantel Clock, the drum shaped case flanked by an Archer holding aloft a bird of prey, with further scrolling side pieces and mounts to a bow fronted plinth base raised on scrolling feet, to a beaded bezel enclosing a 3” black Roman dial, with gilt numerals and further gilt moon hands, to a circular Brass movement with back mounted count wheel, strike on a bell, height 13”

An early 20th Century Mahogany Bonheur Du Jour, with a pierced gallery surround over a concave drawer, flanked on either side by doors enclosing drawers and pigeon holes, and also painted throughout with neo-classical urns and flowers etc, with a gilt tooled inset over a bow front with full width shallow frieze drawer, and raised on ring turned tapering reeded support joined below by a shaped “X” stretcher and splay feet, 32 ½” wide
A carved marble sculpture representing Psyche as a young girl, after the 18th century model by Falconet, she sits on a rock holding her bow, the base inscribed 'D' Apres Falconnet', on a turned socle base and a marble column, late 19th century, the sculpture plus socle: 23.5in (59.7cm) h, the column: 29.75in (75.2cm). A George III statuary white marble chimney piece, circa 1790, with inverted breakfront shelf, the frieze centred by a finely carved rectangular tablet of a sleeping maiden on a day bed, flanked by fluted and jasper inlaid side panels, the end blocks with bow and quiver ribbon ties surmounting the jambs finely carved with epaulettes, ribbon tied garlands of fruit and flowers with jasper panels to the outside and similar surround to the aperture, with embossed fitted cast iron interior, complete with basket grate and later curb, 149cm x 196cm (58.5"x 77"), aperture 114cm x 121cm (41"x 47.5") (See illustration)
A late Victorian Sheraton revival serpentine front compactum wardrobe, veneered in satinwood on mahogany and banded in amboyna, the detachable key decorated cornice above a central clothes press, with bow fronted sliding trays enclosed by a pair of doors with inlaid panels above three long graduated oak turned drawers, one with a label for Hamptons, Pall mall, London, and fitted with Hobbs & co., patent brass locks, flanked by hanging compartments enclosed by concave doors with inlaid ivory panels and dummy drawer fronts, fitted turned worn knob handles, the corner pilasters with Prince of Wales carved plumes capitols, on acanthus turned legs, with turned feet, panelled back. 7ft 8in (234cm) wide x 6ft 6in (198cm) high) x 27.5in (70cm) deep (overall). * The high quality indicates a possible connection with the Prince of Wales (later King edward VII) and Marlborough House.
A Sheraton period faded mahogany veneered Pembroke table, the top with elliptical flaps and bow front ends, banded in satinwood with an end frieze drawer having a paper label. For Jacob and Martha bush. 1767-1844 and 1776-1821, the banded front with brass handles, the square tapering legs with stringing, on brass casters. 3ft (91cm).
