Provenance: Hess-Leu 36, 17 April 1968, lot 427. Rollin & Feuardent, Paris, 27 May 1889, The Comte Albéric du Chastel de la Howardries Collection, lot n°196. The reverse type records the recovery in 20 BC of captives, military eagles and standards that had been lost to the Parthians by Crassus in 53 BC at the disastrous battle of Carrhae. The recovery was achieved through diplomacy rather than military action and ranked among Augustus’s proudest achievements in avoiding the expense and bloodshed of war.

A William IV flame mahogany bow fronted stick barometer, 17.5cm x 10cm silvered register inscribed Troughton & Simms, London, turned half-urnular cistern cover, 99cm high, c.1835 This important instrument making firm goes back to brothers John (d. 1826) and Edward (1756-1835) Troughton took over their Lancashire-born father, Joseph's Fleet Street instrument making business, and on John's death Edward took William Simms (1793-1860) into partnership and the firm flourished gaining many important commissions. It became a limited company in 1915 and in 1922 became Cooke, Troughton & Simms.
