An early 20th century (in late 18th century style) carved and rattan-cane upholstered bergère chair having acanthus terminals to the arms and the bow-fronted rail decorated with a running guilloche, raised on turned tapering fluted legsOverall the chair has a fairly good aged look about it; the rattan caning seems to be in good overall condition, there is a little bit away at the top of the right-hand arm near the arm rest looking at it from the front; the seat appears to be OK, would benefit from a squab cushion; the scrolling arm terminals are carved as acanthus and the paint has been worn away through usage; the arm rests are horse hair with what looks like a very worn material outer; scratches and scuffing mostly to the bottom of the legs commensurate with age, more scratches to the paintwork on the bow-fronted front rail; on the top rail to the left and to the right you can see the wooden uprights separating the rattan cane over time, these have opened slightly and are not construed as breaks but original construction; further discolouration and scratching etc. to the back of the wooden chair; legs look good overall with no major problems, no historic or later woodworm noted
A good early to mid-19th century Windsor armchair; yew-wood bow and supports, pierced splat, shaped elm seat and unusual turned legs united by a crinoline stretcher (130cm floor to top edge x 44cm floor to seat x 54cm arm to arm)The chair has come privately and appears to be in good general overall condition; the splat is good; the patination and colour looks good on the yew-wood bow and the elm seat; the uprights on the back appear good with no major breakage or restoration; there is some wear to the front of the arm terminals as expected with age; the back is slightly out of shape but nothing you would notice unless looked at from the top; looking at the two back legs -- both of them have sustained vertical splits from the top where they join into the seat -- probably about 1ft long and are visible from the back of the legs -- in the auctioneer's view this could be addressed fairly reasonably by a good restorer; the front left-hand leg has a small 2-inch split to the top and the right-hand leg looks generally OK with small split to the very bottom of the leg; the crinoline stretcher looks reasonable, it is noted that it is of a very good colour; the front left-hand leg has 4/5-inch split to the middle area, it is noted on turning the chair up that the splits are occurring in the front legs where the U-shaped crinoline stretcher attaches to them; maybe 10-15 historic worm holes to the back of the seat and underside and one or two plugs and old restoration at the back of the yew-wood bow, so the chair is not without fault but in the auctioneer's opinion would benefit from good, sympathetic restoration
An early 19th century bow-fronted and cross-banded mahogany chest; two half-width over three full-width graduated drawers each with Anglesey-style kite-shaped escutcheon, raised on high turned feet (110cm wide x 52cm deepest x 103cm high) (top badly stained and the chest in need of restoration)
A large late 18th century serpentine-fronted mahogany and cross-banded sideboard; central bow-fronted drawer flanked by one single further concave drawer to the left, and a cellarette drawer below (as two drawers), the right-hand side with further single concave drawer above a cupboard door (as two drawers), the right-hand end with single side storage space and dummy drawers, the left-hand end as dummy drawers etc., the central drawer with quadrant marquetry and rosewood spandrels, raised on shortened square moulded legs (214cm wide x 91cm deepest x 82cm high)The sideboard appears to be of exceptional quality; the auctioneer reports that the sideboard has been cut down at some stage and probably would have been a few inches higher; there are some ink stains, some cup marks and water marks etc. to the surface; swan-neck handles are probably original and so are the locks etc.; the piece appears to be of a standard commensurate with the furniture manufacturer Gillow's; overall the condition is very good and although the top is marked there are no major restorations or similar problems; the auctioneer reports that in his opinion this well-made sideboard would benefit from the expertise of a very good restorer
