Attributed to the Panormo School (Edward Ferdinand Panormo) an English violoncello (cello), circa 1830, cased, with bow. Provenance. This piece is consigned with correspondence dating from 1932 - 1996. August 19th, 1932, a hand written letter addressed to a previous owner, by Louis H Maby, Violin Maker & Dealer, 14 Lower Arcade, Bristol 1, "I have examined the cello you left with me and in my opinion it is a Panormo, youth Panormo (son of Vincent Panormo), London, about 1830". A further typed letter dated 2nd April 1971 by Mr. Robert Raeburn, violin maker, restorer and expert, of The Rectory, Toft, Cambridge, reads "I certify that the Violoncello in the possession of [current vendor] is in my judgement the work of the Panormo family. The instrument is not labelled but can probably be attributed to Edward Ferdinand Panormo of London and Brighton, grandson of Vincenzo Trusiano Panormo. I date it at circa 1830 - 40. It is possible that it is a composite instrement: the back and sides being considerably older than the top and probably the work of Vincenzo Panormo. Descriptiopn: The back in two pieces of 'fiercely' grained maple cut on the slab. The table of medium grained pine. Head and sides of medium 'flamed' maple. The varnish: table of reddish colour. Back and sides of golden-brown. The Violoncello is in a good stage of preservation. I value it at £400". A later hand written letter by J.R Geach, Luthier, 15 Market Square, Bishoip's Castle, Salop, dated July 28th 1987, addressed to the current vendor " Having today examined the viloncello belonging to [current vendor] and having certification dated 1932 and 1971, I am able to say that the instrument, unlabelled, is of the Panormo family or school, and that it dates from the first third of the 19th century. The instrument s in good playing condition but not in a contemporary state of show-room repair. The current price of which such an article changes hands is £4,500" Together with a Halls property receipt dated 1996 and a Sotheby's property report dated 2nd August 1996, detailing an estimate of £3,000 - £5,000.
A Victorian violin with interior paper label B Ruggerius Cremonensis, with single piece back with nice pronounced bow. Length of back 14", with Tourte bow, cased (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: The violin appears to be in extremely good structural order. There are no visible cracks to the back, front or ribs. We can see no evidence of any woodworm. There are no loose joints and the neck is firm. There are numerous old marks and scratches to the surface of the timber. There are no significant marks visible around the bridge. The points of all of the corners are a little rubbed but again there are no significant issues.
A George III oak and mahogany crossbanded bow fronted hanging corner cupboard with green painted shelves. Width 76 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The lock is present but we do not have a key. The doors are not warped but they meet correctly in the middle. The condition of the cabinet is generally good with no significant issues. There is a small veneer loss to the frieze at the left hand side upwards and to the left of the door hinge. Other than this the piece is in very good order with no significant problems. Width across cornice 76 cm. Depth 53 cm. Height 104 cm.
A Victorian wooden and gesso bow rocking horse. Height to top of neck 106 cm, length 188 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The rocking horse is clearly a restoration project. The main body of the horse is however structurally sound with no significantly loose joints. As you will see from our images there are numerous losses to the plasterwork. The bow rocker itself is structurally sound but again very tired. What you basically have is a good basis for a restoration project that has no significant structural issues.
An early 20th century wooden rocking horse, on bow base, painted. Height 81 cm. CONDITION REPORT: Height to top of ears 81 cm, length of rocker 122 cm, width across base at widest point 32 cm. Whilst the rocking horse is structurally sound with no significantly loose joints it does require extensive work. There are some cracks to the timber along the joins around the legs and a lot of the plaster finish is clearly missing. The piece is really a restoration project but the majority of the work required is cosmetic rather than structural.
