Lot 462

Ship Cloth. Traditionally woven near Lake Ranau, Sumatra, this narrow cloth, tatibin, is a spectacular motif of a ship. 175 x 53cm. Late 20th c. Notes: This region of south -west Sumatra was for centuries an important centre for international trade in pepper. The huge wealth generated therefrom was ostentatiously spent on great ceremonies marking the rites of passage at which the display of interictally woven tatibin would have formed an integral part. A ship with huge bow and stern is depicted crammed full on people and animals.
